“KISS THE GIRL” 111
“King of the River” is the boastful song by George Bruns (music) and
Tom W. Blackburn (lyrics) that is used in an exciting race scene in the
adventure film Davy Crockett and the River Pirates (1956). The rowdy
number is sung by an omniscient off-camera chorus to introduce the loud
and boisterous Mike Fink (Jeff York) as Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) and
George Russel (Buddy Ebsen) are about to meet this hero of the rivers.
Soon they engage him in a keel boat race, and, as both parties navigate the
waters, Fink leads a chorus of this ditty in counterpoint to Russel leading
the Crockett team in a reprise of “The Ballad of Davy Crockett.”
“Kiss the Girl” is the calypso-flavored love song sung by the crab Sebastian
(voice of Samuel E. Wright) in the animated film The Little Mermaid
(1989) with other marine animals as they urge Prince Eric to kiss Ariel
and make her a human forever. The Oscar-nominated song was written
by Alan Menken (music) and Howard Ashman (lyric) and was sung in the
2008 Broadway version of The Little Mermaid by Tituss Burgess and the
ensemble. The group Soul II Soul recorded the song with Kolfi in 1995,
and there were also recordings made by Jazz Networks, Steve Tyrell, Ashley
Tisdale, Colbie Caillat, No Secrets, and Vitamin C.
