122 “LITTLE MR. ROO”
for the foursome, who take off in their rocket ship and invite the viewers to
join them as they travel the world looking for new adventures. The program
was based on a series of Baby Einstein videos, which introduce children to
classical music.
“Little Mr. Roo” is a lilting lullaby the mother kangaroo Kanga (voice of
Kath Soucie) sings to her child Roo (Nikita Hopkins) in the animated film
Pooh’s Heffalump Movie (2005). Carly Simon wrote the tender number
urging Roo not to grow up too fast so he’ll have plenty of time for dreams,
and Simon sings it on the soundtrack while Kanga puts Roo to bed. Later in
the movie Roo reprises the soothing song to the frightened young elephant
Lumpy, who cannot find his mother.
“Little Patch of Heaven” is the toe-tapping country-western song by
Alan Menken (music) and Glenn Slater (music) that opens the animated
film Home on the Range (2004). k. d. lang sings the catchy number on the
soundtrack as viewers are introduced to the various animals who live on the
farm called Patch of Heaven. The song is reprised at the end of the movie
when all the animals celebrate their having saved the farm from being repossessed
for back taxes.
“A Little Thought” is the musical lesson in kindness that Belle (voice of
Paige O’Hara) sings in the animated video feature Belle’s Magical World
(1998). Michael and Patty Silversher wrote the gentle but spirited song,
which Belle sings to the enchanted objects about little acts of caring and
understanding that add up to something not so little.
“Little Toot” is the swinging narrative ballad the Andrews Sisters sing on
the soundtrack of the animated anthology film Melody Time (1948). Allie
Wrubel wrote the musical fable about the young tugboat Little Toot, who
is always getting into mischief in the New York Harbor because he’d rather
have fun than work. But all is forgiven when the little tug saves a floundering
ocean liner at sea and he gets a hero’s welcome back at the harbor.
“Little Wonders” is the moving pop song about life’s simple joys written
by Rob Thomas for the animated movie Meet the Robinsons (2007). At
the end of the film, when the orphan Lewis finds happiness in the home
of the eccentric, madcap Robinson family, songwriter Thomas sings this
sweet, reflective number on the soundtrack, celebrating life’s tiny miracles
of love.
