“FUN WITH MUSIC DAY” 61
listed as “You Ain’t Never Had a Friend Like Me,” was one of the few
numbers Alan Menken (music) and Howard Ashman (lyric) completed
years earlier, before they dropped the project. The delightful number was
later interpolated into the mostly Menken-Tim Rice score. With a revised
lyric by Kevin Rafferty, the Las Vegas–like number was used at the Disney
World and Disneyland attraction the Enchanted Tiki Room when it was
reworked in 1998. A bluegrass rendition of the original song was recorded
by Mike Toppins, Glen Duncan, Billy Troy, Jim Brown, James Freeze, and
David Chase.
“A Friendly Face” is the sweet character song Richard Rich wrote for the
animated film short The Small One (1978). On the night before a young Boy
(voice of Sean Marshall) must go into the city and sell his pet donkey Small
One, he sings about the kindly man who might buy the undersized animal
and care for him. The innocence of the Boy and his song is touching, and
the delicate number is very effective.
“Friends for Life” is the swinging song of mutual devotion written by Michael
and Patty Silversher for an episode of the animated television series
TaleSpin (1990). The ape King Louis (Jim Cummings) from The Jungle Book
(1967) makes a guest appearance at a flight stop in the jungle and sings this
slaphappy number with the pilot Baloo the Bear (Ed Gilbert) in which they
merrily insult each other but maintain that they are the closest of pals.
“Friends for Life” is the folk ballad about two pals who are alike in spirit
written by Marcus Hummon for the animated video sequel The Fox and the
Hound 2 (2006). The country-flavored number is sung on the soundtrack
by the group One Flew South while the young canine Copper and fox Tod
frolick together in a pasture.
“Fun and Fancy Free” is the swinging title song from the 1947 animated
anthology film, a scintillating number that happily suggests that one be
happy-go-lucky and enjoy life. George Weiss and Bennie Benjamin wrote
the vivacious number, which is sung by a chorus over the opening credits
and is reprised by Jiminy Cricket (voice of Cliff Edwards) and the chorus
at the end of the movie. Gene Krupa and his Orchestra (vocal by Buddy
Hughes) had a popular recording of the song, as did the Dinning Sisters.
“Fun with Music Day” is the zesty theme song by Tom Adair (music) and
Sidney Miller (lyric) used for Mondays on the television series The Mickey
