“YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND IN ME” 241
Petersen and Kevin Quinn wrote the vaudeville-like number for the wizardturned-genie
Jafar (voice of Jonathan Freeman) and the good Genie (Dan
Castellaneta) as they list their credentials and argue over who is better.
“You’ve Got a Friend in Me” is the Oscar-nominated song Randy
Newman wrote for Toy Story (1995), the first fully computer-generated
animated feature film. Over the opening credits of the movie, Newman
sings the bluesy number about the power of friendship as the boy Andy
plays with his favorite toy, the cowboy Woody. A duet version by Newman
and Lyle Lovett is heard during the end credits of the film. The song is reprised
by the toy penguin Wheezy (Robert Goulet) at the end of the movie
sequel Toy Story 2 (1999), and Tom Hanks is heard singing it during the
final credits of that film. A playful duet version of the song was recorded
by Brian Sutherland and Kaitlin Hopkins, as well as a duo version by Steve
Tyrell and Dr. John.
