28 “THE CALL”
seek their fortune in the Gold Rush in the period movie The Adventures
of Bullwhip Griffin (1967). Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman wrote the
number, which entices young Jack Flagg (Bryan Russell) to run away from
his Boston home and strike it rich out West. The song is also listed as “Cal-
I-For-Nee Gold.”
“The Call” is the haunting, dreamlike song by Regina Spektor that is
used so effectively at the end of the film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince
Caspian (2008). After the lion Aslan informs the Pevensie siblings that they
have become mature and that this will be their last visit to the enchanted
land of Narnia, they magically disappear through an arbor of trees. Spektor
is heard on the soundtrack singing the moving ballad about promising to
return if one is called, so farewells are not needed.
“Call Me a Princess” is the sarcastic, vampy number written by Alan
Menken (music) and Howard Ashman (lyric) for the animated film Aladdin
(1992), but it was cut early on in the production process. The spoiled
princess Jasmine confesses in song that she knows she is obsessed with
clothes, her hair, and other superficialities, but she likes being in the upper
class and always getting her own way. The song was discarded when the
characterization of Jasmine changed to a restless young woman who wants
to escape her royal lifestyle. Kerry Butler made a playful recording of the
song in 2008.
“Call Me, Beep Me” is the Motown-flavored theme song written by Cory
Lerios and George Gabriel for the animated television series Kim Possible
(2002) about a teen girl who has a secret life going on missions to save the
world from evil. Christina Milian sings the rhythm-and-blues number over
the opening sequence, urging listeners to give her a call if there is trouble
and she will not fail them. Sometimes listed as “The Kim Possible Song,”
the number is also heard in the various made-for-television movies featuring
the female superhero.
“Calling All Munchkins” is a silly call to arms song that Rizzo the Rat
(voice of Steve Whitmire) sings with the other rats dressed as Munchkins
in the television movie The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz (2005). Michael Giacchino,
Debra Frank, and Steve L. Hayes wrote the short march, which is
sung every time the Munchkins come to the rescue and help Dorothy and
her friends.
