90 “I WANT IT ALL”
the Pooh (1988) and years later the same sequence would be repeated in the
made-for-video film Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie (2005).
“I Want It All” is the egotistical extravaganza about wanting and expecting
to be rich and famous, sung by the self-centered drama diva Sharpay (Ashley
Tisdale) and her performing sidekick brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) in
the movie sequel High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008). The number,
written by Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil, starts off with the rich brat
Sharpay imagining her future full of fame and wealth and envisioning herself
the toast of Broadway and Hollywood. Ryan wonders how he fits into
her plans and is soon sucked into the fantasy, which explodes into a lavish
production number staged by Kenny Ortega. Ryan and the chorus reprise
the song during the school’s spring musical.
“I Want the Good Times Back” is the deliciously devious “I am” song
for the sea witch Ursula (Sherie Rene Scott) written by Alan Menken (music)
and Glenn Slater (lyric) for the 2008 Broadway version of The Little
Mermaid. The vain and self-centered Ursula laments the loss of the good
old days when she and her evil powers ruled the sea, and she vows to her
henchmen Flotsam (Tyler Maynard) and Jetsam (Derrick Baskin) to be
revenged on King Triton. During the song the sea witch comes up with the
idea of using Triton’s daughter, Ariel, as a way to get to the father. Later in
the show the trio reprises the song as they plan to foil the romance blooming
between Ariel and Prince Eric.
“I Will Go Sailing No More” is the bluesy song of disillusionment written
by Randy Newman for Toy Story (1995), the first fully computer-generated
feature film. Newman sings the number, about finding out who you really
are and giving up on your dreams, on the soundtrack as the spaceman Buzz
Lightyear sees himself on a television commercial and realizes he is just a
toy. During the song Buzz even attempts to fly but finds he cannot, convinced
that he is not a real spaceman. Pleasing recordings of the ballad were
made by Michael Crawford in 2001 and Brian Sutherland in 2005.
“I Will Sing” is the gospel-like number by Jeanine Tesori that concludes
the animated made-for-video prequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning
(2008). When King Triton announces that once again music will be
allowed in his kingdom, the mermaids and sea creatures celebrate and
Jeanette Bayardelle sings this rousing testament to music, vowing to sing for
the rest of her life, on the soundtrack.
