2. Essential needs are increasingly out of reach <strong>for</strong> many people.<br />

Consider this:<br />

• According to the Canadian Rental Housing Index, 42% of renter households in<br />

Ontario spent more than 30% of their be<strong>for</strong>e-tax income on rent in 2011 14 <br />

This included 20% of households who were spending more than 50% of their<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e-tax income on rent<br />

• According to estimates, Ontario is home to more than 595,000 food insecure<br />

households 15 A recent study has found that health care costs <strong>for</strong> Ontario<br />

households experiencing moderate food insecurity were 32% higher than <strong>for</strong><br />

food-secure households 16 <br />

• 84% of First Nations adults living in First Nations communities in Ontario<br />

reported cutting the size of their meals or skipping meals due to lack of<br />

money <strong>for</strong> food in the past year 17 <br />

• In Ontario First Nations communities, the number of adults who sometimes<br />

or often ran out of food, with no money <strong>for</strong> more, increased from 413% in<br />

2008–10 to 529% in 2013–15 18 <br />

• Over half of adults in Ontario First Nations communities (554%) said they had<br />

struggled to meet essential needs in the past year Over a quarter of adults<br />
