01 Exploratory trajectory Research methodology<br />
10<br />
The trajectory was based around a benchmark<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of 11 city ports <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Delta</strong>. Here<strong>in</strong>, we focused on<br />
<strong>the</strong> actors and <strong>the</strong> system as entry po<strong>in</strong>t. In this way<br />
we could keep a broad perspective <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
‘city ports’, which are not easily depicted one-sidedly.<br />
The idea was, by first look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> actors and<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir systemic function<strong>in</strong>g, to translate this knowledge<br />
towards relevant spatial ideas afterwards.<br />
The trajectory started with a desktop research, enriched<br />
with a series of <strong>in</strong>terviews to encompass <strong>the</strong><br />
young <strong><strong>in</strong>itiatives</strong> not visible via <strong>the</strong> web and to have<br />
a better <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g of some <strong><strong>in</strong>itiatives</strong>.<br />
This research formed <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>put for three work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
sessions and resulted <strong>in</strong> different materials:<br />
●<br />
●<br />
●<br />
●<br />
A series of fiches of circular <strong><strong>in</strong>itiatives</strong>: each<br />
fiche is a descriptive compilation of: what happens<br />
here, what are <strong>the</strong> ambitions, who is beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />
it, what is <strong>the</strong> relation to <strong>the</strong> city and port?<br />
A comparative analysis, both descriptive and by<br />
mapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> city ports: are <strong>the</strong>y a sea or <strong>in</strong>land<br />
city port, to which extent can recent history of<br />
<strong>the</strong> city port expla<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> current strategies <strong>the</strong>y<br />
deploy, what are <strong>the</strong> economic dynamics and<br />
geographical context <strong>the</strong>y operate with<strong>in</strong>?<br />
Bottlenecks and leverages city ports encounter<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g of circularity: both at <strong>the</strong> level<br />
of plann<strong>in</strong>g economic activities and at <strong>the</strong> level<br />
of organiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> governance necessary to support<br />
this change<br />
Some possible recommendations to fur<strong>the</strong>r circularity<br />
<strong>in</strong> city ports, by focus<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> framework<br />
and on <strong>the</strong> programm<strong>in</strong>g.
