5 Today transition toward susta<strong>in</strong>able logistics<br />
is conceived as <strong>the</strong> constitution of new <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />
New, smart logistics services and connections are<br />
required <strong>in</strong> order to collect, distribute and process<br />
<strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g and outgo<strong>in</strong>g flows to and from <strong>the</strong> city.<br />
How we organise our logistics (related to flows) can<br />
be def<strong>in</strong>ed by cha<strong>in</strong> optimization and <strong>the</strong> type of<br />
flow that is handled - which can be ei<strong>the</strong>r collected<br />
<strong>in</strong> large quantities and low qualities (volume optimization),<br />
or ra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> small quantities and high<br />
quality (mono-stream). On <strong>the</strong> one hand <strong>the</strong>re is an<br />
efficient collect<strong>in</strong>g system required, <strong>in</strong> order to separate,<br />
collect and distribute flows com<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong><br />
city. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> system of <strong>the</strong><br />
port that can fulfil ei<strong>the</strong>r a function of transhipment<br />
or process<strong>in</strong>g, depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> flow.<br />
The city ports are of strategic importance here, as it<br />
is located on <strong>the</strong> cross-po<strong>in</strong>t between <strong>the</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and distribution system of <strong>the</strong> city, and <strong>the</strong> transhipment<br />
and/or process<strong>in</strong>g function of <strong>the</strong> port.<br />
Cha<strong>in</strong> optimization tries to avoid ris<strong>in</strong>g costs, related<br />
to work<strong>in</strong>g hours, (fuel costs), <strong>the</strong> amount of<br />
transhipment, need for large <strong>in</strong>frastructures and <strong>the</strong><br />
speed and frequency of this transhipment. Here<strong>in</strong>,<br />
smart logistics relates to <strong>the</strong> new technologies and<br />
smart organisation of logistics that formulate an answer<br />
to <strong>the</strong>se challenges.<br />
How will we organize and facilitate with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
port <strong>in</strong> and out flows <strong>in</strong> a susta<strong>in</strong>able manner?
