What is <strong>the</strong> relation with <strong>the</strong> port and water?<br />
Located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> former biggest fruit and juice cluster<br />
of <strong>the</strong> world, an <strong>in</strong>terest and bus<strong>in</strong>ess was developed<br />
for organic waste and its possibilities. It<br />
started <strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>-between period between <strong>the</strong> former<br />
port area and <strong>the</strong> future as a cityport. Leftovers<br />
from <strong>the</strong> (former) fruit-port were collected and used<br />
as resources for test<strong>in</strong>g and process<strong>in</strong>g. Several<br />
years later, <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>ess has grown by x30 and<br />
<strong>the</strong>y provide monostream organic waste flows from<br />
<strong>the</strong> city, to be processed by o<strong>the</strong>r companies, located<br />
around <strong>the</strong>m. As certa<strong>in</strong> mono-streams are more<br />
valuable <strong>the</strong>y provide <strong>the</strong> service of sort<strong>in</strong>g and upscal<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>se flows until enough volume is ga<strong>the</strong>red.<br />
What is <strong>the</strong> relation with <strong>the</strong> city?<br />
As <strong>the</strong>y work with organic waste streams from <strong>the</strong><br />
city, <strong>the</strong>ir location close to <strong>the</strong> city is crucial. For<br />
<strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> proximity to <strong>the</strong>se flows (both city and<br />
port), <strong>the</strong> space for test<strong>in</strong>g (environmental legislations/smell/noise/space)<br />
and <strong>in</strong>teraction with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
‘makers’, were key to <strong>the</strong>ir success. As such, <strong>the</strong>y fill<br />
<strong>in</strong> a gap between large scale <strong>in</strong>dustrial process<strong>in</strong>g<br />
facilities and small scaled labo’s that develop new<br />
technologies.<br />
On top, <strong>the</strong>y work toge<strong>the</strong>r with a neighbourhood<br />
<strong><strong>in</strong>itiatives</strong> around job <strong>in</strong>tegration programs where<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>y educate long-termed unemployed people with<br />
skills <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> circular economy.<br />
What are <strong>the</strong> ambitions?<br />
Work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this specific service for 3 years now,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y developed a network of providers (restaurants,<br />
distribution centres, …) and a network of producers<br />
around <strong>the</strong>m. With <strong>the</strong>ir development of <strong>the</strong><br />
Rotterdam BioHub <strong>the</strong>ir position is more consolidated<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir bus<strong>in</strong>ess is grow<strong>in</strong>g rapidly. As such,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y positioned <strong>the</strong>mselves as a crucial spill and<br />
game changer for a more high-level valorisation of<br />
organic waste,<br />
Who is beh<strong>in</strong>d it?<br />
The Rotterdam Biohub is a concept created by<br />
GroenCollect [Green Collect] and Stadsgas<br />
[<strong>City</strong>gas]. These companies focus on collect<strong>in</strong>g organic<br />
waste from dense urban environments. The<br />
hub focuses on <strong>the</strong> production of materials from<br />
<strong>the</strong>se waste streams. For example produc<strong>in</strong>g detergent<br />
from orange peel<strong>in</strong>gs or anti corrosion fluids<br />
from bananas.<br />

What is <strong>the</strong><br />
timeframe?<br />
Pure, monostream residual organic waste is collected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city of Rotterdam<br />
with small e-trucks as <strong>in</strong>put for o<strong>the</strong>r, small and specific production<br />
processes.<br />
With a small e-truc, <strong>the</strong> waste materials are collected throughout <strong>the</strong> city.
