What happens here?<br />
Biopark Terneuzen is a <strong>in</strong>itiative to f<strong>in</strong>d a unique and<br />
<strong>in</strong>novative solution to facilitate susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />
growth. The biopark represents a new way of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to create agro-<strong>in</strong>dustrial susta<strong>in</strong>ability. ‘Smart<br />
L<strong>in</strong>ks’ explores <strong>the</strong> synergies between companies <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> same region. They seek for potentials of eacho<strong>the</strong>r<br />
waste streams and byproducts. Therefore, it is<br />
always a work <strong>in</strong> progress, where o<strong>the</strong>r companies<br />
or <strong><strong>in</strong>itiatives</strong> can l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>mselves on <strong>the</strong> platform. It<br />
follows <strong>the</strong> idea of cluster<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Biopark Terneuzen is found<strong>in</strong>g fa<strong>the</strong>r of Bio Base<br />
Europe, toge<strong>the</strong>r with Flanders Bio-Economy Valley.<br />
What is <strong>the</strong> relation with <strong>the</strong> port?<br />
Many important mult<strong>in</strong>ational companies are located<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> port. It is evident that <strong>the</strong>y can benefit from<br />
each o<strong>the</strong>rs waste streams, s<strong>in</strong>ce current projects<br />
prove to be valuable. Good opportunities can be<br />
found, just because of <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation of port-related<br />
functions and <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>dustrial companies. But<br />
apart from <strong>the</strong>se big companies, <strong>the</strong> important connection<br />
with <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>terland is present.<br />
What is <strong>the</strong> relation with <strong>the</strong> city?<br />
Reth<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ‘Smart L<strong>in</strong>ks’ asks for skilled workforces.<br />
The story of Biopark and Bio Base Europe is<br />
only possible because of good education <strong>in</strong> technical<br />
schools and <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g centers.<br />
Currently, ‘Smart L<strong>in</strong>ks’ connects only <strong>the</strong> different<br />
companies, but it is also possible to connect<br />
<strong>the</strong> cities to heat networks of companies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future.<br />
What are <strong>the</strong> ambitions?Current projects are:<br />
WarmCO2, where <strong>the</strong> CO2 and heat of company<br />
Yara is used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> greenhouses; Cargill gives energy,<br />
steam, water and starch residu to Nedalco;<br />
biomass plant gives water to Heros recycl<strong>in</strong>g.; biomass<br />
from greenhouses is used to make energy...<br />
The aim is to create more jobs, attract new <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />
activities, make profit for <strong>the</strong> companies and dim<strong>in</strong>ish<br />
<strong>the</strong> ecological impact.<br />
Who is beh<strong>in</strong>d it?<br />
The platform consists of companies, but also research<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutes, platforms and municipalities.<br />
Zeeland Seaports is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiator and program manager<br />
of <strong>the</strong> redevelopment of <strong>the</strong> canal area.-<br />
