What’s happen<strong>in</strong>g? How does it happen?<br />
In <strong>the</strong> port of Hamburg, <strong>the</strong> HPA (Hamburg Port<br />
Authority) changed and <strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> a new control<br />
system based on digital <strong>in</strong>telligence which is guarantee<strong>in</strong>g<br />
more efficient operations. Thanks to <strong>the</strong><br />
SmartPort philosophy <strong>the</strong> port is achiev<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />
economic growth try<strong>in</strong>g to maximize <strong>the</strong> benefit<br />
for <strong>the</strong> people of <strong>the</strong> harbor and of <strong>the</strong> city and, at<br />
<strong>the</strong> same time m<strong>in</strong>imiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> environmental impact.<br />
The port efficiency has been improved thanks to sensor<br />
for traffic flows and goods, <strong>the</strong> SmartPort logistic<br />
is comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g economic and ecologic aspect <strong>in</strong> three<br />
different strategies: control on traffic flows, improvement<br />
of <strong>in</strong>frastructure and flow of goods. The HPA is<br />
promot<strong>in</strong>g environmental friendly mobility with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
harbor reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> energy consumption limit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
dependence of <strong>the</strong> port from conventionally generated<br />
energy <strong>the</strong>refore reduc<strong>in</strong>g emission.<br />
Why is this an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g circular <strong>in</strong>itiative for<br />
circular harbours?<br />
The smartPORT project is focus<strong>in</strong>g on streaml<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
operations with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Port of Hamburg and is aim<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to build on <strong>the</strong> green energy strategy of <strong>the</strong> port as<br />
well as focus<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong>telligent traffic and trade flows.<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> projects <strong>in</strong>troduced by <strong>the</strong> SmartPort <strong><strong>in</strong>itiatives</strong><br />
is <strong>the</strong> shore power from renewable energy,<br />
<strong>in</strong>. fact this is lett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cruises that are arriv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Hamburg port to be supplied by power sourced<br />
by renewable energy, fur<strong>the</strong>rmore <strong>the</strong> ocean-go<strong>in</strong>g<br />
vessels are supplied with electricity through a<br />
transformer station and a mobile transfer mach<strong>in</strong>e at<br />
<strong>the</strong> cruise ship term<strong>in</strong>al. Ano<strong>the</strong>r strategy with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
SmartPort project is focus<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong>novative technologies<br />
regard<strong>in</strong>g renewable energy, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> HPA<br />
is also experiment<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> policy mak<strong>in</strong>g level.
