network. Software programs include Microsoft<br />

Office, Adobe Acrobat and digital media<br />

too<strong>ls</strong>, and e-mail and Internet applications like<br />

Mozilla and Macromedia Dreamweaver. A<br />

large variety of instructional, classroom, and<br />

research resources are a<strong>ls</strong>o available on the<br />

ThinkPad. These include the online catalog,<br />

databases, and electronic journa<strong>ls</strong> provided by<br />

the Z. Smith Reynolds Library.<br />

Information Systems maintains an extensive<br />

array of online information systems<br />

that support <strong>University</strong> admissions, student<br />

registration, grade processing, payroll administration,<br />

accounting services, and many other<br />

administrative and academic applications.<br />

In addition, the <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> Information<br />

Network (WIN) provides the <strong>University</strong><br />

community with features like faculty, staff,<br />

and student directories; an alumni directory<br />

and career networking service; online<br />

class registration; and vehicle registration.<br />

Students a<strong>ls</strong>o have access to computing<br />

resources outside the <strong>University</strong>. The <strong>University</strong><br />

is a member of the Inter-<strong>University</strong><br />

Consortium for Political and Social Research<br />

(ICPSR), located at the <strong>University</strong> of Michigan.<br />

Membership in ICPSR provides faculty and<br />

students with access to a large library of data<br />

files, including public opinion surveys, crosscultural<br />

data, financial data, and complete<br />

census data. The <strong>University</strong> is a<strong>ls</strong>o a member<br />

of EDUCAUSE, a national consortium of<br />

colleges and universities concerned with computing<br />

issues.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> has an extensive collection<br />

of computing facilities serving both academic<br />

and business needs. Twenty-five LINUX servers<br />

and 24 Windows-based servers provide<br />

for business computing needs and services.<br />

A mix of 47 LINUX and AIX systems and<br />

30 Windows-based systems provide for messaging,<br />

systems management, Internet, intranet,<br />

courseware, various research needs, and<br />

file and print services. A 130-node LINUX<br />

supercomputing cluster provides supercomputing<br />

services for mathematics, computer<br />

science, physics, and other scientific research<br />

applications. These systems are available to<br />

students, faculty, and staff 24 hours a day<br />

through the <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>University</strong> network<br />

or ISP con-nectivity. All connections are<br />

protected by VPN and firewal<strong>ls</strong>.<br />

<strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>’s network infrastructure includes<br />

a gigabit Ethernet backbone, 100 megabit<br />

switched connectivity to the desktop, and<br />

pervasive, 802.11a/g wireless connectivity in<br />

all campus buildings. <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> has a gigabit<br />

Ethernet connection to the Winston-Salem<br />

RPOP (regional point of presence) for Internet<br />

access. This RPOP connects the <strong>University</strong><br />

to the North Carolina Research and Education<br />

Network (NCREN), the Internet service<br />

provider for the majority of North Carolina<br />

colleges and universities. Through this connection,<br />

<strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> has access to additional<br />

extensive supercomputing facilities located<br />

throughout the state of North Carolina as well<br />

as access to all the premiere research networks<br />

in the world, including Internet II, Abilene,<br />

and the VBNS (Very high performance Backbone<br />

Network Service). <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> works<br />

closely with NCREN on other advanced network<br />

and Internet technologies.<br />

Information Systems a<strong>ls</strong>o provides telephone<br />

and cable television services to the students,<br />

faculty, and staff of <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

All residence hall rooms are equipped<br />

with telephone jacks and cable TV connections.<br />

Local dial service for the campus and<br />

Winston-Salem area is provided as part of the<br />

housing package. Students who reside in campus<br />

housing receive personal security codes<br />

for dialing long-distance cal<strong>ls</strong>, which are billed<br />

to them each month.<br />

Cable television, while providing a recreational<br />

outlet, plays an important role by providing<br />

access to campus information and educational<br />

offerings. Cable channel 2 is the <strong>Wake</strong><br />

<strong>Forest</strong> Information Systems channel, which<br />

provides updated information on campus<br />

technology, Help Desk hours, and the status of<br />

various technology services. Cable channel 6 is<br />

student-run WAKE-TV, which features various<br />
