The Mark Schurmeier 9/11 Peace Fund assists<br />
undergraduate students who are residents<br />
of the U.S., based on merit and need, with<br />
preference to students directly affected by the<br />
September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the<br />
U.S., or other victims of political, social, or religious<br />
terrorism. The fund may a<strong>ls</strong>o support<br />
student projects, travel, or academic studies<br />
dedicated to the reduction or elimination of<br />
terrorist activities and the promotion of peace.<br />
The John Aaron & Vida Lee P. Senter Scholarship<br />
assists North Carolinians based on ability,<br />
diligence, integrity, character, and leadership,<br />
with preference to residents of Harnett<br />
County, NC, and active members of a Baptist<br />
church in North Carolina.<br />
The Emily Crandall Shaw Scholarship in Liberal<br />
Arts is made through the art, English, music,<br />
and theatre departments to a student who<br />
best exemplifies a diverse interest in literature,<br />
art, music, and theatre.<br />
The Sara Jo Brownlow Shearer Scholarship is<br />
awarded to students specializing in areas of<br />
learning disabilities.<br />
The Franklin R. Shirley Debate Scholarship assists<br />
students with debate experience who<br />
successfully participate in the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
debate program.<br />
The Daniel R. & Barbara F. Shouvlin Scholarship<br />
assists students who help achieve and sustain<br />
the diversity of the student body.<br />
The Adelaide Alexander Sink Scholarship assists<br />
students from middle income families, with<br />
first preference to Florida residents who will<br />
help achieve and sustain the diversity of the<br />
student body, and second preference to similar<br />
residents of other states.<br />
The Kester A. Sink Scholarship assists students<br />
from middle income families who are residents<br />
of Surry County, NC.<br />
The John William Slate, M.D., Scholarship assists<br />
premedical students, with preference to those<br />
from western North Carolina.<br />
The Joseph Pleasant & Marguerite Nutt Sloan<br />
Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an applied<br />
music student based on ability and need.<br />
Application is made through the Department<br />
of Music.<br />
The Fred Smith Company Scholarship assists<br />
needy students from Johnston County, NC.<br />
The Ann Lewallan Spencer & Lewallan Family<br />
Scholarship assists needy children of alumni.<br />
The William K. Stamey Scholarship assists<br />
needy students from North Carolina and<br />
other nearby areas of the <strong>University</strong>’s historic<br />
constituency.<br />
The William G. Starling Scholarship assists<br />
needy students based on their ability, character,<br />
integrity, leadership, and desire to make a<br />
contribution to the community in which they<br />
live.<br />
The C.V. Starr Foundation Scholarship assists<br />
needy students.<br />
The Gilbert T. Stephenson Scholarship is based<br />
on ability and need to a student from Kirby<br />
Township or Northampton County, NC.<br />
The Sigmund Sternberger Scholarship assists<br />
needy North Carolinians, with preference<br />
to students from Greensboro and Guilford<br />
County, NC.<br />
The John Belk Stevens Scholarship in Business<br />
assists senior business majors with particular<br />
interests in retailing or marketing. Application<br />
is made through the Wayne Calloway School<br />
of Business and Accountancy.<br />
The Edna & Ethel Stowe Scholarship gives<br />
preference to female students with a physical<br />
disability.<br />
The J.W. Straughan Scholarship assists needy<br />
students, with preference to students from<br />
Duplin County, NC, who are interested in<br />
pursuing a medical career (especially in the<br />
field of family practice).<br />
