Student Health Service<br />

The Student Health Service promotes a<br />

healthy lifestyle through health education<br />

and health maintenance. A physician-directed<br />

medical staff offers urgent care, illness care,<br />

physical examinations, counseling, limited<br />

psychiatric care, allergy injections, immunizations,<br />

gynecological services, pharmacy,<br />

laboratory, sports medicine clinic, referral<br />

to specialists, confidential HIV testing, and<br />

travel information.<br />

A full staff is available by appointment<br />

during clinic hours (fall and spring semesters):<br />

8:30 a.m.-noon; 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m., Monday<br />

through Friday and Monday-Thursday<br />

during the summer. A limited staff is available<br />

for urgent care and observation 24 hours a<br />

day, seven days a week, when school is in session<br />

during the academic year. The services<br />

of the staff are covered by tuition. There is<br />

a charge for medications, laboratory tests,<br />

observation care, and some supplies and services.<br />

Payment can be made by paying cash,<br />

check, Deacon Dollars or the charge can be<br />

placed on the student’s account in Financial<br />

and Accounting Services. A copy of the statement<br />

is given to the student to file with their<br />

insurance company.<br />

Confidentiality. Medical information and<br />

records are strictly confidential. Information<br />

or records are not released to <strong>University</strong><br />

officia<strong>ls</strong>, friends, or family members without<br />

the student’s permission. In addition information<br />

will not be shared with therapists or<br />

physicians who are not involved in the<br />

student’s immediate care without the<br />

student’s permission.<br />

Class Excuses. The health service does not issue<br />

statements or excuses for class attendance.<br />

Health Insurance. <strong>University</strong> policy requires<br />

that all students have health insurance. Information<br />

about the student group insurance<br />

plan, for those not covered by a family plan,<br />

is available at www.wfu.edu/shs or www.<br />

studentresources.com. The annual rate for<br />

2005-2006 was $1,131. Students are strongly<br />

encouraged to review their current plan to<br />

assure adequate coverage.<br />

Inclement Weather. When the <strong>University</strong> is<br />

closed due to inclement weather, the Student<br />

Health Service will have limited staff and<br />

will be able to provide care only for injuries<br />

and urgent illnesses. Appointments will be<br />

rescheduled.<br />

Retention of Medical Records. Student medical<br />

records are retained for ten years after<br />

the last treatment, after which time they are<br />

destroyed. Immunization records are kept<br />

longer.<br />

Academic Calendar<br />

The academic calendar of the College and<br />

the Wayne Calloway School of Business and<br />

Accountancy includes a fall semester beginning<br />

in late August and ending in December,<br />

a spring semester beginning in January and<br />

ending in May, and two five-week summer<br />

sessions. Semesters usually last fifteen weeks.<br />

Orientation and Advising<br />

A required orientation program for new<br />

students in the College precedes first-time<br />

registration. An academic adviser provides<br />

guidance during and between registration<br />

periods throughout the student’s first and<br />

second years. Advisers meet with students<br />

both individually and in small groups. A faceto-face<br />

meeting with the adviser is required<br />

before all registration periods. Students are<br />

encouraged to take the initiative in arranging<br />

additional meetings at any time to seek advice
