From such a <strong>Malay<strong>an</strong></strong> country ra<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>an</strong> from <strong>an</strong>y maritime<br />

estabhshments, which ahvays hear <strong>the</strong> stamp <strong>of</strong> colonization, we<br />

might be justified in presuming <strong>the</strong> Malays <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts to<br />

have proceeded in <strong>the</strong> first inst<strong>an</strong>ce ; but it happens that we are<br />

not obliged to rest our opinion upon this reasoning from proba-<br />

bilities, for we have in support <strong>of</strong> it <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> native<br />

histori<strong>an</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peninsula, <strong>the</strong> most distinguished <strong>of</strong> whom<br />

assert in positive terms that <strong>the</strong> earliest <strong>Malay<strong>an</strong></strong> settlers <strong>the</strong>re,<br />

in <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> adventure from Sumatra, where <strong>the</strong>y had pre-<br />

viously inhabited a district on <strong>the</strong> b<strong>an</strong>ks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river Maldyu,<br />

said, in <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> mythology, to have its source in <strong>the</strong> moun-<br />

liberty <strong>of</strong> referring <strong>the</strong> reader to <strong>the</strong> History <strong>of</strong> Sumatra (ed<br />

is here adv<strong>an</strong>ced, collected <strong>an</strong>d discussed. It is not however tc<br />

be confidently expected that <strong>an</strong> opinion so much at vari<strong>an</strong>ce witt<br />

those hi<strong>the</strong>rto prevailing on <strong>the</strong> subject, will be adopted <strong>with</strong>out<br />
