INTRODUCTION. xiii<br />

have no claim to be excepted from <strong>the</strong> foregoing* definition <strong>of</strong><br />

western foreigners, or settlers from Arabia, Persia, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

coasts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peninsula <strong>of</strong> India, attracted by <strong>the</strong> richness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

trade, <strong>an</strong>d intermixed <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country by mar-<br />

riages, or ra<strong>the</strong>r, perhaps, in <strong>the</strong>se days, <strong>the</strong> progeny <strong>of</strong> such<br />

hiixture.<br />

Upon <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se terms Mi", raffles has judiciously<br />

observed to me that in <strong>the</strong>ir collective sense <strong>the</strong>y are equivalent<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Arabic expression ^\jij£. arahu cijem, denoting all m<strong>an</strong>-<br />

kind, as Greeks <strong>an</strong>d Barbari<strong>an</strong>s, Jews <strong>an</strong>d Gentiles ; which is<br />

perfectly true as to <strong>the</strong> universality, but <strong>the</strong> Malays do not, in<br />

imitation <strong>of</strong> those arrog<strong>an</strong>t phrases, assume to <strong>the</strong>mselves a superiority<br />

over <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world ; for however, as Maho-<br />

met<strong>an</strong>s, believing in one God, <strong>the</strong>y might be inclined to r<strong>an</strong>k<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves above all poly<strong>the</strong>ists, this sentiment c<strong>an</strong>not apply to<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r Mahomet<strong>an</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> continent <strong>of</strong> India, much less to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

religious instructors <strong>the</strong> Arabi<strong>an</strong>s. Their expression must be<br />

considered as a mere local designation, serving to draw a line<br />

between <strong>the</strong> countries <strong>an</strong>d people situated to <strong>the</strong> eastward <strong>of</strong><br />

^fAm-head or entr<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> straits <strong>of</strong> Malacca, who are <strong>the</strong><br />

dr<strong>an</strong>g de-bawali <strong>an</strong>gin, <strong>an</strong>d those situated to <strong>the</strong> westward <strong>of</strong><br />

that meridi<strong>an</strong>, who are <strong>the</strong> dr<strong>an</strong>g de-atas <strong>an</strong>gin. Precision, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> same time, is not to be looked for in matters <strong>of</strong> this nature,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d I am unable to determine whe<strong>the</strong>r tegu, siam, camboja,<br />

COCHIN-CHINA, <strong>an</strong>d CHINA itself are in fact understood to be<br />

comprehended in <strong>the</strong> former division, or whe<strong>the</strong>r it is re-<br />

stricted (as seems from <strong>the</strong>ir writings <strong>the</strong> more probable) to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Malay<strong>an</strong></strong> <strong>an</strong>d east-insular countries only.<br />

The appellation <strong>of</strong> 3Ialdyu is given in common both to <strong>the</strong><br />

people <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> <strong>l<strong>an</strong>guage</strong>, but <strong>the</strong>re are o<strong>the</strong>r terms applicable<br />

d only
