\lju-i setaii; words ending <strong>with</strong>^ r or <strong>with</strong> * vi, to rhyme <strong>with</strong> those<br />

ending in J / or <strong>with</strong> ^n — but in <strong>the</strong> earlier days <strong>of</strong> our own poetry<br />

were not <strong>of</strong>fences as great as <strong>the</strong>se committed <strong>an</strong>d overlooked, <strong>an</strong>d how<br />

m<strong>an</strong>y ages <strong>of</strong> progressive refinement did it not require to bring our<br />

metre <strong>an</strong>d our rhyme to <strong>the</strong>ir present state <strong>of</strong> comparative correctness?<br />

In order to enable <strong>the</strong> learner to apply <strong>the</strong> foregoing rules <strong>an</strong>d obser-<br />

vations to <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>l<strong>an</strong>guage</strong> more fully th<strong>an</strong> he could have<br />

<strong>the</strong> me<strong>an</strong>s <strong>of</strong> doing from <strong>the</strong> occasional short examples given in <strong>the</strong><br />

course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Grammar, <strong>an</strong>d to supply in some degree <strong>the</strong> w<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> books<br />

printed in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay<strong>an</strong></strong> character, as well as <strong>the</strong> scarcity uf lu<strong>an</strong>uscripts<br />

in <strong>an</strong>y o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>an</strong>ds th<strong>an</strong> those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natives, I have judged it indis-<br />

pensably necessary to subjoin for his use, a Praxis, consisting <strong>of</strong> extracts<br />

from several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir works, both in prose <strong>an</strong>d verse, which will serve<br />

to exercise <strong>an</strong>d promote <strong>the</strong> skill he may have acquired, until oppor-<br />

tunities are afforded him <strong>of</strong> having access to more ample <strong>an</strong>d more<br />

original sources <strong>of</strong> information.<br />
