wounded breast, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>n raised it to his eyes. " Rama, said he, I<br />
have two dying requests to make to you. The one is that you do not<br />
give my wife to (my bro<strong>the</strong>r) Sugiiva, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> second that you will take<br />
my children under your protection. With regard to Sugriva you will<br />
not find his qualities <strong>of</strong> adv<strong>an</strong>tage to you, for his word is not to be<br />
trusted ; but <strong>the</strong> person from whom you may expect useful service is <strong>the</strong><br />
son <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> my bro<strong>the</strong>rs, named Hamlm<strong>an</strong>." Having spoken<br />
<strong>the</strong>se words he let go <strong>the</strong> h<strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> Rama, <strong>an</strong>d immediately died. At<br />
<strong>the</strong> moment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> departure <strong>of</strong> his spirit, a vivid light was seen to issue<br />
from <strong>the</strong> crown <strong>of</strong> his head, in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a palm tree, <strong>an</strong>d to ascend to<br />
<strong>the</strong> skies. Rama gave orders to Sugriva to support <strong>the</strong> body, <strong>an</strong>d<br />
Laksam<strong>an</strong>a to wash it, whilst he himself poured <strong>the</strong> water for <strong>the</strong> pur-<br />
pose. This being done, he comm<strong>an</strong>ded <strong>the</strong>m to bring wood <strong>of</strong> aloes, <strong>an</strong>d<br />
s<strong>an</strong>dal wood, <strong>an</strong>d camphor, <strong>an</strong>d saffron, <strong>an</strong>d amber, <strong>an</strong>d spikenard ; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
<strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> assist<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Laksam<strong>an</strong>a he burned <strong>the</strong> corpse <strong>of</strong> Balia-raja (on<br />
<strong>the</strong> pile). When this ceremony was perfoimed, he proceeded along<br />
<strong>with</strong> Laksam<strong>an</strong>a <strong>an</strong>d Sugriva to <strong>the</strong> palace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deceased. Upon this<br />
occasion every individual <strong>of</strong> tht monkey kind, small <strong>an</strong>d great, harmless<br />
<strong>an</strong>d mischievous, old <strong>an</strong>d young, seated <strong>the</strong>mselves in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> Sri<br />
Rama. Among <strong>the</strong>se was one aged monkey, named Pdtah Jambfin,<br />
<strong>the</strong> younger bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> BalJa-raja's fa<strong>the</strong>r, whose venerable beard reached<br />
to his waist. Him Srt Ra?na (now become <strong>the</strong> regulator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> con-<br />
quered state <strong>an</strong>d sovereign disposer <strong>of</strong> honours) seated above Sugriva,<br />
placing Sugilva above <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> Balia-raja, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>se above <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
monkies assembled,"
