GRAMMAR<br />

OF THE<br />

3IALAYAN LANGUAGE.<br />

^PREVIOUSLY to treating <strong>of</strong> words, which are <strong>the</strong> proper subject <strong>of</strong><br />

Grammar, it is necessaiy to describe <strong>the</strong> characters or letters, in<br />

respect to <strong>the</strong>ir form <strong>an</strong>d sound, by which <strong>the</strong> words are expressed in<br />

writing.<br />

The Malays have for this purpose adopted <strong>the</strong> alphabet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Arabi<strong>an</strong>s, whose literature has in all countries accomp<strong>an</strong>ied <strong>the</strong> intro-<br />

duction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mahomet<strong>an</strong> religion ; but m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> its peculiar sounds,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d especially <strong>the</strong> gutturals, being little suited to <strong>the</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t pronunciation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> East-insular <strong>l<strong>an</strong>guage</strong>s, <strong>the</strong>y are never to be found in <strong>the</strong> ortho-<br />

graphy <strong>of</strong> indigenous <strong>Malay<strong>an</strong></strong> words, <strong>an</strong>d even to those Arabic terms<br />

which <strong>the</strong> Malays have borrowed from <strong>the</strong>ir instructors <strong>the</strong>y give a<br />

smoothness <strong>of</strong> utter<strong>an</strong>ce that nearly prevents <strong>the</strong>ir being recognised by <strong>an</strong><br />

Arabi<strong>an</strong> ear. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>re existed in <strong>the</strong>se <strong>l<strong>an</strong>guage</strong>s several<br />

nasal <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r sounds, for Avhicli <strong>the</strong> alphabet, in its original state, had<br />

no corresponding letters, <strong>an</strong>d to remedy this defect <strong>the</strong>y were under <strong>the</strong><br />

necessity <strong>of</strong> making additions to it ; not indeed by <strong>the</strong> invention <strong>of</strong> new<br />

B forms.
