Nouns in this <strong>l<strong>an</strong>guage</strong> c<strong>an</strong>not properly be said to possess <strong>the</strong> distinc-<br />

tions ci<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> gender, number, or case. The absurdity <strong>of</strong> attributing<br />

difference <strong>of</strong> sex to things, or to <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> things not org<strong>an</strong>ised by na-<br />

ture to reproduce <strong>the</strong>ir kind, did not suggest itself to <strong>the</strong> framers or<br />

methodisers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay<strong>an</strong></strong> tongue. The real difference existing in<br />

<strong>an</strong>imate beings, as well as that presumed to exist in vegetables, is denoted<br />
