placed in comparison <strong>with</strong> him. Alas, those ferocious beasts have glutted<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir appetites (<strong>with</strong> his flesh), savage as <strong>the</strong> rhinoceros who devours its<br />

own <strong>of</strong>fspring I Alas, my lord, thy child is left, a helpless <strong>an</strong>d destitute<br />

orph<strong>an</strong> ; she is reduced to <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> one in need <strong>of</strong> charitable protec-<br />

tion ; to <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> a captive slave, liable to be pr<strong>of</strong><strong>an</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> touch<br />

<strong>of</strong> vulgar h<strong>an</strong>ds." The princess <strong>the</strong>n bid farewell to her mo<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>with</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> intention <strong>of</strong> ascending <strong>the</strong> funeral pile <strong>of</strong> her husb<strong>an</strong>d ; but <strong>the</strong><br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>with</strong> a flood <strong>of</strong> tears, embraced <strong>an</strong>d kissed her daughter, endea-<br />

vouring <strong>with</strong> sweetly-affectionate words to sooth <strong>an</strong>d divert her ft-om <strong>the</strong><br />

resolution <strong>of</strong> burning herself. " Think not, my child, said she, <strong>of</strong><br />

making thyself a sacrifice whilst <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> thy inf<strong>an</strong>t is yet so tender.<br />

When she shall st<strong>an</strong>d less in need <strong>of</strong> thy care, do as thou mayest judo-e<br />

right." The princess <strong>the</strong>n seized a kris, <strong>an</strong>d attempted to stab herself,<br />
