xxviii INTRODUCTION.<br />
late Dutch East-India Comp<strong>an</strong>y, <strong>an</strong>d a distinguished member<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Batavi<strong>an</strong> philosophical society, addressed to my friend<br />
jvir. CHARLES HOLLOWAY <strong>of</strong> ^encooleu (froiu whom I received<br />
it), accomp<strong>an</strong>ied <strong>with</strong> two well executed drawings made from<br />
stone images <strong>of</strong> Siva or Mahadeva, <strong>an</strong>d JBhav<strong>an</strong>i, under <strong>the</strong><br />
appellations <strong>of</strong> JRhairava <strong>an</strong>d Batu-Bharav^, <strong>an</strong>d also <strong>with</strong><br />
copies <strong>of</strong> long inscriptions carved upon <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se or si-<br />
milar images. The characters <strong>an</strong>d <strong>l<strong>an</strong>guage</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inscriptions<br />
are stated to be equally unknown to <strong>the</strong> natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior<br />
<strong>of</strong> Java (where <strong>the</strong>y were found) <strong>an</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> Brahm<strong>an</strong>s <strong>of</strong> bengal<br />
to whom he had shewn <strong>the</strong>m. But upon examination <strong>the</strong><br />
characters prove to be no o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>an</strong> <strong>the</strong> square Pali, consi-<br />
dered as sacred in <strong>the</strong> Binna or Ava country, <strong>an</strong>d in Siain.<br />
Of this my late worthy <strong>an</strong>d ingenious friend col. m. symes, in<br />
his account <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> embassy to Ava, gives a specimen, taken<br />
from a beautiful m<strong>an</strong>uscript containing <strong>an</strong> account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceremony<br />
used in <strong>the</strong> consecration <strong>of</strong> rhaha<strong>an</strong>s or priests ; which<br />
Pali m<strong>an</strong>uscript he afterwards presented to earl spencer, <strong>an</strong>d<br />
is now in <strong>the</strong> magnificent library <strong>of</strong> that noblem<strong>an</strong>. Being my-<br />
self so fortunate as to possess <strong>an</strong> original alphabet <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
materials for ascertaining <strong>the</strong> <strong>l<strong>an</strong>guage</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inscriptions, I<br />
hope (<strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> Mr. wilkins) to succeed in tr<strong>an</strong>slating<br />
<strong>the</strong>m.<br />
Very probable it is that <strong>the</strong> inhabit<strong>an</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> both isl<strong>an</strong>ds, Java <strong>an</strong>d Sumatra, be-<br />
fore <strong>the</strong>y had embraced <strong>the</strong> Mahomet<strong>an</strong> faith, were <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> religion <strong>of</strong> Brahma.<br />
Will you let me have for a moment again <strong>the</strong> letter from Mr. Marsden, in order<br />
to peruse <strong>the</strong> requests <strong>of</strong> that learned gentlem<strong>an</strong>, <strong>an</strong>d should I be able to furnish<br />
him <strong>with</strong> <strong>an</strong>y information, I shall be happy to embrace <strong>the</strong> opportunity.<br />
I remain, &c.<br />
To Charles Jlolloway, Esq. A. CouPEHUS."<br />
