City of Somerville
Office of the City Physician
August 26, 19*4-2
Patrick Michael Mullaney, 17 Laurel Terrace. Mr. Mullaney worked as
fireman for g years. On April 22, 193^ he volunteered a transfusion at the
Somerville Hospital. The transfusion was given by direct method. It Is claimed
by the deceased, that as a direct result of that transfusion he developed
septicemia. In fact a law suit followed against the specialist who gave that
transfusion, and the deceased won the verdict.
He became a patient at the Somerville Hospital immediately following
the transfusion for 13 months. He developed multiple abscesses throughout
his body, and incidently the patient to whom he gave the transfusion,, died
the following day of septicemia. It was claimed by the patient that cultures
taken from his wounds corresponded to the disease from which that woman died.
He developed arthritis of the spine and both legs. He had to have someone
put on his shoes. He was given light work in the fire department in regard
to giving out permits for gas etc. from door to door. He came to my office in
1939, sometime in September. He had a bad cough from which he was not getting
any better. I told him to see his family doctor, Doctor McCrossan, who is now
deceased,.or if he wanted to I would have an X-ray of his chest at Middlesex
