Advanced Rhetoric: The Classical<br />
Essay<br />

Prerequisite: ENGL <strong>10</strong>1.<br />
This course is designed to help students<br />
develop critical thinking, writing and research<br />
skills beyond the level achieved in<br />
ENGL <strong>10</strong>1. Particular emphasis is placed<br />
on increasingly complex classical methods<br />
of invention, arrangement and style for<br />
writing assignments that demand sound<br />
organizational skills. Students will read<br />
and critically evaluate (for meaning, purpose,<br />
strategy and style) expository and<br />
argumentative essays from a variety of<br />
classical sources and multi-cultural perspectives<br />
and then use these essays as<br />
rhetorical models for their own writing assignments.<br />
Students will be required to<br />
test prejudices they hold, prove or disprove<br />
a hypothesis, evaluate the opinions<br />
of others, explain the effect of the media,<br />
and attempt to synthesize opposing arguments<br />
on an issue through critical thinking.<br />
Most of the written assignments will<br />
require library research and documentation.<br />

a variety of literary genres, including short<br />
fiction, novel, poetry, drama, and film, students<br />
will critically analyze cultural roles<br />
and images of women from a variety of<br />
theoretical perspectives. Students will explore<br />
the challenges women have faced,<br />
the biologically and socially constructed<br />
roles they have assumed and sometimes<br />
rejected, and the successes and accomplishments<br />
they have achieved in a predominantly<br />
