discriminatory or is being<br />
applied in a discriminatory<br />
manner, or<br />
4) Belief that the prerequisite<br />
was established in violation of<br />
regulations and/or the<br />
established district-approved<br />
policy and procedures.<br />
Challenging Prerequisites<br />
Students may challenge a course<br />
prerequisite or corequisite if they<br />
meet one of the following conditions:<br />
1) Demonstrated knowledge or<br />
the ability to succeed in the<br />
course without the<br />
prerequisite, or<br />
2) The possibility of undue delay<br />
in attaining the goals<br />
established in of an<br />
educational plan because the<br />
prerequisite or corequisite<br />
course has not been made<br />
reasonably available, or<br />
3) Belief that the prerequisite is<br />
discriminatory or is being<br />
applied in a discriminatory<br />
manner, or<br />
4) Belief that the prerequisite<br />
was established in violation of<br />
regulations and/or the<br />
established district-approved<br />
policy and procedures.<br />
A Prerequisite Challenge Form can<br />
be obtained from the registrar in<br />
the Admissions & Records Office.<br />
The completed form must be presented<br />
to the registrar two weeks<br />
prior to the beginning of semester<br />
in which it is to be considered.<br />
NonCredit Counseling and<br />
Matriculation<br />
The Noncredit Counseling Department<br />
assists students and members<br />
of the community who are<br />
building the basic skills needed for<br />
personal and professional growth.<br />
Its staff provides the guidance students<br />
need to establish their goals<br />
and effectively plan their educational<br />
experience.<br />
Reasons to enroll in noncredit<br />
classes include:<br />
• Test Preparation: Assessment,<br />
GED, California High School Exit<br />
Exam (CAHSEE)<br />
• Strengthening skills required for<br />
employment and college success<br />
• Developing learning tools for<br />
college success<br />
• Continued learning support for<br />
students enrolled in credit classes<br />
An orientation is required prior to<br />
enrollment in the Basic Skills Lab,<br />
English as a Second Language<br />
(ESL), short-term vocational programs<br />
and selected counseling<br />
services. Students are encouraged<br />
to make an orientation/intake appointment<br />
to learn more about:<br />
• Academic, personal and career<br />
counseling<br />
• Career assessment and guidance<br />
• Preparation for the college<br />
assessment test (Accuplacer)<br />
• Student Educational Plans (SEP)<br />
• Preparation for exams such as<br />
the GED or CAHSEE<br />
• Orientation with personalized<br />
enrollment assistance<br />
• Transition assistance to<br />
degree/certificate of achievement<br />
programs<br />
• Support and parenting skills<br />
groups<br />
• Academic, career and personal<br />
enrichment workshops<br />
