An examination of the background and involvement<br />
of America in the Vietnam War.<br />
The course will primarily focus on the<br />
American involvement in Southeast Asia,<br />
but will also examine the origins of Vietnamese<br />
nationalism and the struggle for<br />
independence in Vietnam and its global<br />
implications and manifestations. A Cold<br />
War framework developed early in the<br />
course will be utilized to understand U.S.<br />
involvement in the Vietnam War. The<br />
course will conclude with an assessment<br />
of the long term effects of the Vietnam<br />
War on American society and the rest of<br />

events leading to US entry into World War<br />
II. The course will focus on American involvement<br />
in World War II, but will also<br />
examine the systemic fracturing of the<br />
world order through the rise of Japanese,<br />
German, and Italian imperialism, assess<br />
the impact of the worldwide economic depression<br />
in the 1930's, military strategies<br />
and conduct, and analyze the impact of<br />
the war on the home front, as well as, the<br />
long-term effects on American policy and<br />
