(Foreign Language Department)<br />
The Foreign Languages program offers<br />
four semesters of proficiency-based instruction<br />
in listening, speaking, reading,<br />
and writing Spanish, French, German, and<br />
Japanese. Areas of study include beginning<br />
and intermediate vocabulary, grammar<br />
and syntax, pronunciation, and<br />
cultural understanding. The program combines<br />
classroom lectures, guided practice,<br />
and a variety of communicative activities<br />
in the target language, with individual<br />
work in the language lab using various<br />

and history of Spain. The course critically<br />

Spanish for Public Service Personnel<br />
3 Units Grade or P/NP<br />
Spanish 150 emphasizes basic Spanish for<br />
public service personnel; especially recommended<br />
for students in the fields of elementary/secondary<br />
education, nursing,<br />
fire science, police science, emergency<br />
medical personnel and related vocational<br />
areas. This course will enable students to<br />
acquire a practical, working knowledge of<br />
Spanish with a vocabulary suitable to the<br />
student's areas of specialization. 54 lecture<br />

Spanish III<br />

This intermediate level course is a study of<br />
the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking<br />
cultures, focusing on intermediate<br />
level structures and readings of culturally<br />
relevant authentic materials. Emphasis is<br />
on developing oral, listening, reading and<br />
writing skills in order to acquire proficiency<br />
in Spanish. Reading strategies and<br />
fundamentals of formal composition are<br />
introduced in conjunction with short, levelappropriate<br />
literary selections. Class is<br />
largely conducted in Spanish. 90 lecture<br />

effective skills for reading, understanding<br />
and interpreting more advanced readings<br />

high level is provided. Grammatical concepts<br />
are thoroughly reviewed and expanded.<br />
