Joshua Gaglia As a senior in high school, I thought I knew what I wanted to do with my life. However, after I was accepted into a local college as an engineering student, I realized I wasn’t so sure anymore. I knew I wanted to do something else. I just didn’t know what that would be. So, I decided to attend Citrus College, where I encountered instructors who provided me with helpful information and wise counsel. In particular, Professor Brian Waddington took extra time to mentor me. Through our discussions and interactions, I became more focused on my goals – and discovered I wanted to pursue a career in business. My hard work paid off when I was accepted at some of the most influential business schools in the nation, ultimately choosing the prestigious University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business over USC, UCLA, and others. Now, I’m getting the chance to achieve my highest dreams. Thank you, Citrus – and thank you, Professor Waddington. My Citrus Story Denicia Crutcher–Harris I didn’t decide to get a college degree until I had an infant with disabilities and a young child in school. Unsure of what I could do as a single mother, I knew I liked math and figured I might try to work toward a degree that utilized that skill. One day I took my baby for a walk on the Citrus campus. While I was there, I was convinced to try to start over in spite of any misgivings I had about succeeding. Right then, I enrolled in classes. At Citrus, I discovered what I really wanted to do in life. I found a new “family” and made lots of friends. The EOP&S staff, in particular, encouraged me and provided counseling and support as I began my transformation from a shy person into a confident, active participant in clubs and campus life. In 2009, I received an A.A. in Fine Arts/Dance and an A.S. in Natural Sciences/Math. I will attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to pursue a career in Marine and Environmental Science. Carol Chambers School was challenging for me, so I never dreamed I would ever attend—much less graduate from—college. In high school, the only thing that kept me going was sports. Having a baby at 18 years old put an end to any thoughts I had for furthering my education or pursuing a career. However, everything changed when a high school friend called and said she needed a pitcher for her softball team at Citrus College. The next thing I knew, I was not only playing collegiate softball, I was also taking college classes. Anyone who plays sports knows that winning is the result of a “team” effort, and that’s what I encountered at Citrus when it came to softball and academics. I worked hard, and the support I received from my teachers and counselors helped me overcome my obstacles. I managed to persevere through the tough times and earned a transfer scholarship. I attended the University of La Verne and eventually earned a master’s degree in Counseling. Today, I am a teacher and my three children attend Citrus College.
