controlling the movements of the Italian troops in the Cortina Valley until it<br />

was occupied by the Alpine Troops on the 18th of September 1915. The SASSO<br />

DI STRIA was in Austrian hands, as was the Settas and its western slopes and<br />

the crest of Lagazuoi with emplacements numbered in the photograph.<br />

At the Cinque Torri (Five Towers) and Averau spread the Italian line<br />

with artillery emplacements and footlights to light up the mountain si<strong>de</strong> of<br />

Lagazuoi. The Italian trenches <strong>de</strong>scen<strong>de</strong>d from the heights of Lagazuoi and<br />

rose up the other si<strong>de</strong> of the valley towards Col Gallina with emplacements<br />

and fortifications. The Tre Sassi Fort (Three Stones Fort, in the Valparola Pass,<br />

enabled the Austro – Hungarian forces to strategically control the access to<br />

Val Badia, and was <strong>de</strong>fen<strong>de</strong>d at its flanks by the impenetrable of the Sasso di<br />

Stria and Lagazuoi.<br />

The Fortified mountain<br />

It was soon clear to both si<strong>de</strong>s<br />

that the best protection from enemy<br />

artillery fire was provi<strong>de</strong>d by the<br />

mountain itself and so began the<br />

excavations with emplacements and<br />

encampments transforming Piccolo<br />

Lagazuoi into a natural fortification.<br />

To achieve this they had to however<br />

solve the many problems associated<br />

with transporting the cannons,<br />

compressors, provisions, ammunition,<br />

water, and wood to build<br />

and heat the huts. This<br />

kind of medieval castle,<br />

recreated in a mountain<br />

700 m high to an altitu<strong>de</strong><br />

of 3000 m was crossed by<br />

a <strong>de</strong>nse network of paths,<br />

look-out posts, trenches,<br />

dormitories and hospitals<br />

to support the troops<br />

engaged up on high, were<br />

constructed. It was also<br />

quickly discovered that<br />

the only way to conquer<br />

the well fortified enemy<br />

positions was to dig a<br />

tunnel un<strong>de</strong>r them and
