C’est ainsi que l’Hôtel du Rhône ouvrit ses portes le 14 juillet 1950. Le succès fut
immédiat et ceci grâce au savoir-faire de son gestionnaire Richard Lendi. Ce dernier
plaça la restauration au centre des préoccupations. 10 ans après son ouverture,
les cuisines furent ainsi rénovées et agrandies, permettant l’ouverture d’un
« Restaurant français » où se succédèrent les grands noms de la cuisine. En
1963, Richard Lendi transmis la direction de l’établissement à son fils Richard A.
Lendi. Celui-ci était également convaincu qu’il fallait séduire la clientèle locale
grâce à des restaurants de qualité.
En 1988, Georg Rafael, propriétaire du groupe éponyme et ancien réceptionniste
de l’établissement, se porta acquéreur de l’hôtel et chargea Marco Torriani d’en
prendre la direction. Pour devenir la destination favorite des hommes d’affaires,
l’hôtel entreprend une nouvelle mue pour se doter d’équipement high-tech et de
salles de conférence.
La clientèle locale reste conquise grâce au « Dimanches en musique » ou à la
venue de chefs étoilés.
L’an 2000 marque un tournant pour l’Hôtel du Rhône, le Groupe Mandarin
Oriental rachète le Groupe Rafael. L’établissement entame ainsi de lourds travaux
de rénovation pour entrer de pleins pieds dans le nouveau millénaire.

Tout commence, en 1946, avec l’installation de l’ONU à Genève. Pour faire face à l’arrivée des délégués, le Conseil d’Etat
demanda à la Chambre de commerce de dénicher des décideurs privés prêts à investir dans la création d’un hôtel.

The Hôtel du Rhône was born, opening its doors to guests for the first time on
14 July 1950. The operation was an immediate success, thanks to the flair and
expertise of manager Richard Lendi. Fine food was central to Lendi’s strategy,
and ten years after the hotel first opened, the kitchens were extended and
completely refurbished for the opening of a ‘French restaurant’ headed by a
succession of top culinary stars. In 1963, Richard Lendi handed the directorship
of the Hôtel du Rhône to his son, Richard A. Lendi, pursuing his father’s
mission to attract a local clientele to its top-quality restaurants.
In 1988, the Hôtel du Rhône was bought by Georg Rafael, owner of the eponymous
hotel group (and himself a former employee, on the front desk).
Rafael appointed Marco Torriani as director, with a mission to establish the
hotel as the venue of choice for a top-flight business clientele, offering stateof-the-art
technology and conference suites. At the same time, the hotel’s
devoted local clientele enjoyed “Musical Sundays”, and the creations of a
string of multi-starred guest chefs. The year 2000 marked a turning point in
the history of the hotel: Groupe Rafael was bought by the Mandarin Oriental
Group, and the building underwent extensive renovation, ready for the dawn
of the 21st century.
