BilAl
Influenced by his past, retracing the story of his exile from
Yugoslavia and his arrival in Paris, at the heart of the city’s
intellectual elite, Enki Bilal’s comic books and films explore
the often manipulative, paternalistic relationship between
ordinary people and the powers-that-be. His dark,
cold graphics – tinged with irony and characteristic black,
Balkan humour – express the essence of his art. After
comic books, and stints as a producer and set designer,
Enki Bilal has tried his hand at directing, with a new play,
Suspection, staged in Paris in December 2010. Each new
project is the result of a new encounter, he explains. His
voracious appetite for new forms of artistic expression also
“gets him out more” – because illustrating comic books is
a solitary calling, indeed.
Recently, Enki Bilal has illustrated a series of short stories
by Paulo Coelho recounting the history of the iconic
German Swiss watch brand IWC Schaffhausen.
Fascinated by the Big Pilot’s Watch worn by aviators
during the Second World War, Bilal accepted the commission
from George Kern – a meeting of true enthusiasts and
artistic like minds – together with an invitation to travel to
Schaffhouse and find out more about the low-profile company.
After reading Coelho’s short stories (he met the
author once the illustrations were complete) Bilal created a
series of bright, colourful plates in strong contrast to his
usual graphic output – as if the project, focusing on mankind
and the passage of time, had freed his fertile imagination.
Times flies by all too fast, says Bilal, but he never
gives in to nostalgia, preferring to move forward at his own
pace, in step with the times.
His personal take on the mechanical watch? “An exceptional,
magical mechanism, absolutely essential in a world
full of electronics. Timeless, matchless and unchanging: a
‘time-keeper’ whose second hand reminds us – almost
indecently – of the relentless, cruel passage of time.”
