Subject: Sense of belonging to school among adolescents in linguistic minority contexts: A social
issue in the matter of health
Dear Sir/Madam:
My name is Marie Drolet and I am an associate professor at the School of Social Work at the University
of Ottawa. The research project cited above, led by a multi-disciplinary team funded by the Canadian
Institutes of Health Research, is linked to the Skills for Adolescence program in which your child
participated last year. This program had the goal of preventing alcohol and drug use. It also offered your
child an opportunity for building character. This research project seeks to gain a clearer understanding of
the opinions of students in Grades 8 and 9, as well as those of their parents, with respect to various issues
stemming from the implementation of this preventive program. The data we collect will also serve to
improve Skills for Adolescence.
Our research study is focused on identifying: (1) the students’ sense of belonging to the school within
their context of linguistic minority; (2) the impacts of the Skills for Adolescence program on your child;
and (3) the contribution (if any) that a sense of belonging makes to the implementation of this preventive
program.
I invite you and/or your child to take part in a personal interview that will last about one hour. To show
our appreciation, we will offer the participant(s) one gift certificate for $25, redeemable at the local
business of their choice (one certificate per interview). We will be asking for your opinion and/or your
child’s opinion about: (1) his/her sense of belonging to his/her school; (2) his/her ties to teachers and
friends; (3) his/her participation in extracurricular activities; (4) relationship with his/her parents; and (5)
the impact of Skills for Adolescence. The interviews will be held in English. We will agree in advance
on where to hold the interview. Our research assistants, Mélanie Martel and Tina Desabrais, would be
willing to meet you at a place of your choice.
All interested persons are welcome to contact me either to ask questions or to volunteer as a participant.
I am pleased to mention that your principal is very enthusiastic about this study.
I thank you most sincerely for your consideration.
Yours truly,
Marie Drolet, PhD, RSW
