UNDERGROUND WONDERS
Camerano di sotto è una
vera e propria città sotterranea
che, con il suo sistema
ipogeo, costituisce un’attrattiva
unica nell’area del Conero.
Le grotte d’arenaria, scavate
dall’uomo sono antiche
quanto il paese, raggiungendo
i 20 metri di profondità
(foto 1-2). L’attuale aspetto risale
al medioevo. Fino al 1830
sono state rifugio contro le
incursioni piratesche (musulmane,
barbaresche, uscocche).
Nel luglio del 1944, durante
il passaggio del fronte
di guerra, la popolazione
cameranese, e non solo, qui
trovò riparo.
Negli ultimi decenni sono
state utilizzate come cantine
per la conservazione e
stagionatura del vino Rosso
Conero. L’itinerario diurno attuale,
suggestivo ed evocativo,
seduce il visitatore coinvolgendolo
e affascinandolo.
Lo sguardo è attirato e conquistato
da quest’opera collettiva,
fatta di cunicoli, volte,
archi, camminamenti abbelliti
da fregi, bassorilievi e simboli
religiosi e magici. La sera,
potrete invece apprezzare
l’atmosfera unica e misteriosa
suscitata dalle visite itineranti
delle Grotte di Camerano.
Dal 2017, inoltre, sono attivi
percorsi di turismo inclusivo
per consentire ai visitatori
con disabilità sensoriali di
apprezzare gli ambienti del
sottosuolo.

Below ground, Camerano is a
true subterranean town that is
a unique attraction in the Conero
area thanks to its system of
hypogea. The man-made sandstone
caves are as ancient as
the town, and go as deep as
20 metres. (photo 1-2) Its current
appearance dates back
to the Middle Ages. Until 1830
the underground was a shelter
against pirate attacks (Muslims,
barbarians, Uskoks). In July 1944,
when the area was under siege,
the population of Camerano and
other towns found shelter here.
In recent decades, they have
been used as wine cellars for
the conservation and aging of
Rosso Conero wine. The current
suggestive itinerary seduces visitors,
engaging and fascinating
them. Visitors are captivated by
this collective work made of tunnels,
vaults, arches and walkways
embellished with friezes, bas-reliefs
and religious and mystic
symbols. In the evening, you
can appreciate the unique and
mysterious atmosphere evoked
by the visit held in the caves of
Camerano. Inclusive tourism itineraries
have been added since
2017, to allow visitors with sensory
disabilities to appreciate
the subterranean wonders. The
caves of Camerano can be visited
only through a guided tour.

ricorda il ruolo svolto da Domenico
Corraducci nell'intuire
le potenzialità del Maratti.
Proseguendo si raggiunge la
chiesa di Santa Faustina o S.
Nicola di Bari, alla quale l'artista
dona un dipinto raffigurante
il santo nel XVIII secolo.
Maratti vi fa anche trasferire
le spoglie della martire cristiana
San Faustina, omonima
della figlia.
Traces of the painter are visible
in his native town. From the bust
dedicated to him in the central
Piazza Roma (Rome Square),
going down Via Carlo Maratti
(Carlo Maratti Street) you will
find the parish church of the
Immaculate Conception, where
the altarpiece depicting the Madonna
and Child is one of the
most important early works of
the artist. In the nearby Palazzo
Corraducci, which runs along the
street, there is a commemorative
plaque added on the occasion
of the bicentenary of the painter's
death, which recalls the role
played by Domenico Corraducci
in sensing the potential of Maratti.
On the way back to Piazza
Roma, you can find the church of
Saint Faustina or Saint Nicola of
Bari, to which the artist donated
a painting depicting saint Nicholas
in the 18th century. Maratti
also arranged for the remains of
the Christian martyr Saint Faustina,
homonymous of his daughter,
to be transferred to the church.

SAN FRANCESCO CHURCH
Sede di bellissime opere del
XVII secolo, la chiesa di San

il centro storico del
paese con il suo alto campanile.
La tradizione vuole
che proprio San Francesco
d'Assisi sia il suo fondatore e
del vicino convento, nel 1215
durante il suo viaggio verso
l'Oriente. Dopo numerosi
interventi di restauro della
chiesa originaria oggi rimane
solo il portale in pietra.
