“LA RONDINELLA” THEATRE
Il teatro (foto 2) in stile ottocentesco
fu realizzato da Virginio Tombolini, direttore
tecnico al Teatro la Fenice di
Venezia. Nel soffitto vi sono raffigurate
le Muse Tersicore, Euterpe, Talia e Melpomene
del pittore perugino Domenico
Bruschi.

Montefano è un piccolo borgo adagiato
sulla sommità di un colle tra i torrenti
Fiumicello e Monocchia. Offre la possibilità
di piacevoli passeggiate rilassandosi
poi in uno dei locali del centro
storico e dintorni.
Montefano is a small village lying on top of
a hill between the Fiumicello and Monocchia
streams. It offers the opportunity to
take pleasant strolls and relax in one of the
locations of the historical centre and its surroundings.

An old saying goes: "For the poor farmer,
who works very hard and cannot rest, the best meal
is Polenta".
Molte sono le feste che animano la vita
del borgo di Montefano. In particolare
nel mese di luglio, durante il “Palio delle
contrade - Montefano ‘900” (foto 3),
l’intero paese si trasforma, rievocando
l’Epoca dello Splendore, con spettacoli,
sfilate in abito, auto d’epoca, balli e gastronomia.
I momenti più attesi sono la
corsa dei “Papi sugli Asini” e la “Sedia
del Papa”.
There are many festivals that animate life in
the village of Montefano. In particular, the
whole town is transformed in July during the
“Palio delle contrade - Montefano 1900s”
(photo 3), when the Age of Splendour is
evoked with shows, fashion shows, vintage
cars, dances and gastronomy. The most anticipated
moments are the race of the “Popes
on Donkeys” and the “Pope’s chair”
Storia
HISTORY
Incerte sono le fonti che permettono
di risalire alla storia del paese, ma è
opinione diffusa, fra gli storici, che sia
Montefano che Filottrano abbiano avuto
origine dalla distruzione, da parte dei
Goti, della colonia romana Veragra. Tra
i vicoli del centro è possibile visitare
la casa in cui, il 6 maggio 1501, nacque
Marcello Cervini, salito al soglio pontificio
nel 1555 per soli 22 giorni, con il
nome di Marcello II.
The sources that enable going back to the
origins of the town are unreliable, but historians
generally believe that both Montefano
and Filottrano originated from the Goths’
destruction of the Roman colony Veragra.
One of the alleys of the historic centre has
the house where on 6 May 1501, Marcello
Cervini was born; he rose to the papal throne
in 1555 for only 22 days, under the name
Marcellus II.

MONTEFANO EXPERIENCE
Il nostro consiglio è quello di avvicinarvi
a Montefano scegliendo un itinerario
che passa dalle campagne. In queste
zone infatti le colline si aprono in ampie
vallate, con un dolce saliscendi, tra girasoli,
campi di grano e vigne.
We suggest coming to Montefano from the
countryside. In fact, in these areas the hills
open up into wide valleys with gentle ups
and downs between sunflower and wheat
fields and vineyards.
COLLEGIATE OF SAINT DONATO
Chiesa in stile tardo barocco (XVIII sec.)
All’interno (foto 4) si trova una pala che
raffigura l’Assunzione della Vergine tra
San Donato e San L. Gonzaga. Sotto l’altare
è conservata un’urna con le ossa
di 7 santi martiri.

Donato and Saint L. Gonzaga. Below the altar,
an urn with the bones of 7 martyr saints.
Chiesa S. Filippo
ST. FILIPPO CHURCH
In stile barocco (1703), fu intitolata a
San Filippo Benizi (1233-1285). La tela
raffigurante il santo fu realizzata dal pittore
recanatese Tibalducci.
In Baroque style (1703), it was named after
St. Filippo Benizi (1233-1285). The canvas depicting
the saint was made by the Recanati-born
painter Tibalducci.

The nineteenth-century theatre (photo 2)
was built by Virginio Tombolini, the technical
director of the La Fenice Theatre in Venice.
The ceiling has depictions of the Tersicore
Muses Euterpe, Talia and Melpomene by the
Perugian painter Domenico Bruschi.
Il torrione
THE TOWER
Il Torrione di Montefano (foto 1), sorge
all’interno del centro storico, ricostruito
dagli osimani sui ruderi di una precedente
fortificazione, distrutta durante
l’occupazione dello Sforza (1434). Una
caratteristica che ne connota l’appartenenza
all’architettura militare, sono i
merli ghibellini, legati alle strategie di
guerra.
The Tower of Montefano (photo 1) rises up
within the historical centre: it was rebuilt by
the citizens of Osimo on the ruins of a previous
fortification, then destroyed during
the occupation of the Sforzas (1434). An architectural
feature that links it to its military
past are the Ghibelline crenels, which are
linked to war strategies.
