Le mura antiche
del centro storico
THE ANCIENT WALLS OF
THE HISTORIC CENTRE
Attorno al VII sec. per difendersi
dalle scorrerie dei barbari,
il borgo venne fortificato
e fu costruito il castello di
Sirolo a strapiombo sul mare
con annessa l’antica torre
campanaria di difesa, inserita
nella possente cortina muraria
che termina oggi con il
torrione, (foto 6) unico fortilizio
superstite dei numerosi
bastioni a difesa della cinta
difensiva.
To defend itself against barbarian
attacks, the village was
fortified around the 7th century
and the Sirolo castle was built
over the sea with its ancient
bell tower for defense. It was inserted
into the mighty wall that
ends with the tower today (photo
6), and is the only remaining
fortress of the numerous defensive
bastions of the village’s
walls.

SIROLO
Un museo a cielo aperto,
unico nelle Marche, per vivere
un viaggio nel tempo
grazie alla ricostruzione in
scala reale di un villaggio piceno
dell’età del Ferro, in cui
è possibile entrare. Esperienze
emozionanti con visori 3D
per visitare la Tomba della
Regina di Sirolo a grandezza
naturale ricostruita digitalmente
e spazi didattici. Presso
il Centro visite del Parco
del Conero è possibile prenotare
una visita all’Archeodromo
e fare esperienze con

This open-air museum, the only
one of its kind in the Marche
region, takes you on a journey
through time with its full-scale
reconstruction of an Iron Age
Piceno village, which you can
walk through. 3D viewers add
an exciting twist to a visit to the
digitally reconstructed life-size
Tomb of the Queen of Sirolo and
educational spaces. At the Conero
Park Visitor Centre you can
book a visit to the Archeodrome
and experience the 3D viewers
for yourself.

Area archeologica
“I Pini” di Sirolo
ARCHAEOLOGICAL
AREA ”I PINI” OF SIROLO
L’area archeologica si trova
in località “I Pini di Sirolo”
(foto 5) ed è l’unica nelle
Marche in cui è attualmente
possibile visitare un settore
di necropoli Picena. Nell’area
sono visibili tre circoli,
di cui il più grande (40 m di
diametro) è la tomba gentilizia
a circolo della necropoli
conosciuta come la TOMBA
DELLA REGINA DI SIROLO,
rinvenuta nel 1989, tumulata
alla fine del VI sec. con due
carri (un calesse e una biga)
e ricchissimi corredi (una kline
decorata in avorio e ambra.)
La visita all’area archeologica
si integra con quella
al vicino Antiquarium Statale
di Numana dove è possibile
ammirare gran parte di questi
reperti tra cui il “Carro
della Regina di Sirolo”.

The archaeological site is located
in “I Pini di Sirolo” (photo 5)
and is the only site in the Marche
region where you can visit
a Picentes necropolis. There are
three visible circles in the area,
and the largest (40 m in diameter)
is the necropolis tomb
known as the TOMB OF THE
QUEEN OF SIROLO, it was discovered
in 1989, and had been
buried at the end of the 6th
century along with two chariots
and a rich set of grave goods (a
kline decorated in ivory and amber).
Combine your visit to the
archaeological site with a visit to
the nearby State Antiquarium of
Numana, where you can admire
most of the artefacts from the
necropolis including the “Chariot
of the Queen of Sirolo”.
At the Pro Loco tourist office in
Sirolo you can book a visit to
the Archaeological Area.

Chiesa di San
Nicola di Bari
CHURCH OF ST.
NICOLA OF BARI
Edificata nel 1732, in stile neoclassico,
affaccia su piazza
Vittorio Veneto. Al suo interno
conserva una serie di antiche
opere figurative, tra cui
la Santa Casa di Loreto, un
Crocifisso ligneo del ‘500 e
un antico organo Fedeli del
1723 (foto 1-4).
Built in 1732 in Neoclassical style,
the church overlooks Vittorio
Veneto square. It houses a number
of ancient figurative works,
including the Holy House of
Loreto, a wooden crucifix from
the sixteenth century and an
ancient Fedeli organ from 1723
(photo 1-4).
Chiesa del
SS. Rosario
CHURCH OF SS. ROSARIO
Costruita nel 1571 in stile barocco,
la chiesa, quasi nascosta
tra le case, si trova in
prossimità dell’Arco Gotico
che segna l’ingresso meridionale
di Sirolo. Al suo interno,
oltre alle spoglie di
Pietro di Treia (1214-1304),
sono conservate alcune
opere di interesse storico e
artistico. Conserva una atmosfera
di pace particolare.
Built in 1571 in Baroque style,
the church is almost hidden
between houses; it is located
near the Gothic Arch that marks
the southern entrance to Sirolo.
Inside, besides the remains of
Pietro di Treia (1214-1304), there
are some works of historical and
artistic interest. It preserves an
atmosphere of particular peace.
Teatro alle Cave
CAVE THEATRE
Una cava abbandonata nel
Monte Conero, che a giugno
si trasforma in un teatro, fino
a ospitare 3500 persone. Il
teatro anima le notti sirolesi
in uno scenario unico. La sua
caratteristica principale è l’acustica,
che lo rende unico
ed eccezionale per la lirica e
ogni tipo di musica.
An abandoned quarry of Monte
Conero that turns into a theatre
in June and can accommodate
3,500 people. The theatre
animates the Sirolo nights in a
unique scenario. Its main feature
is its acoustics, rendering the
theatre unique and exceptional
for opera and all types of music.

Teatro ottocentesco in splendida
pietra bianca del Monte
Conero interamente inglobata
nelle mura cittadine. La
sala interna (foto 2) è abbellita
da una galleria di colonne
doriche con due ordini di
palchi che, sia nella stagione
invernale che estiva, offrono
una vasta varietà di rassegne
teatrali, spettacoli e concerti.
Nel mese di agosto ospita
il celebre premio nazionale
Franco Enriquez, regista
scomparso ad Ancona il 30
Agosto 1980, con l’Alto Patrocinio
del Capo dello Stato.

Nineteenth-century theater
made with the splendid white
stone of Monte Conero and
completely embedded in the
city walls. Its interior hall (photo
2) is embellished by a gallery
with Doric columns with two levels
of seating. In both the winter
and summer it offers a wide
variety of theatrical plays, shows
and concerts. In August, it hosts
the famous Franco Enriquez National
Award along with the High
Patronage of the Head of State.
Franco Enriquez was a director
who disappeared in Ancona on
30 August 1980.

La chiesa, poco distante dal
centro di Sirolo (in auto o
sentiero 301), è situata in
prossimità della vetta del
Monte Conero. Inizialmente
costruita come eremo dai
monaci benedettini, fu luogo
di preghiere. Presenta una
forma a tre navate, i capitelli
in marmo e pietra che
ornano le colonne dell’interno
sono ricchi di elementi
decorativi come foglie di
acanto, bacche di pino, fiori
e animali. (foto 3)
The church is not far from the
centre of Sirolo (by car or pathway
301) and is located near
the summit of Monte Conero.
Initially built as a hermitage for
Benedictine monks, it was a place
of prayers. It has three naves
with marble and stone capitals
that adorn the interior’s columns,
rich in decorative elements
such as acanthus leaves, pine
berries, flowers and animals.

LA PIETRA DI SAN MICHELE
Incastonata nella parete della
chiesa, la pietra di riporto
che raffigura San Michele
con una spada e con incisa
la scritta: l’Angelo Michele
è qui. L’Arcangelo Michele
(figura che ha dato il nome
ad una delle due spiagge
di Sirolo) è sempre stato
considerato dalla chiesa e
dalla tradizione popolare il
Principe più alto di tutti gli
Arcangeli. Dov’è presente S.
Michele è da sempre luogo
di Sovranità Spirituale.
ST. MICHELE’S STONE
Embedded in the church’s wall,
the stone depicts St. Michele
with a sword and the inscription:
Angel Michele is here. Archangel
Michele (the saint who gave
one of Sirolo’s two beaches its
name) has always been considered
by the church and popular
tradition as the highest Prince
of all the Archangels. Anywhere
St. Michele is present has always
been a place of Spiritual Sovereignty.
