Giacomo Leopardi, Recanati was defined as “The Infinite city”.

CITY OF CULTURE
Recanati si eleva sul crinale tortuoso di
un colle, tra le valli dei fiumi Potenza e
Musone: è una tipica città-balcone. Anticamente
il suo territorio era popolato
dai Piceni. Poi, si susseguirono invasioni
da parte dei Romani, dei Goti, dei Bizantini
e dei Longobardi.
Recanati rises up on the tortuous ridge of a
hill between the valleys of the Potenza and
Musone Rivers: it is a typical balcony-city. In
ancient times its territory was populated by
the Picentes. Then followed invasions by the
Romans, the Goths, the Byzantines and the
Longobards.
Durante l’alto medioevo, gli abitanti vivevano
all’ombra di tre castelli feudali:
Monte Volpino, Monte Morello e Monte
Muzio, che verso la metà del sec. XII si
unirono, dando luogo al libero comune.
A motivo di un raggiunto prestigio e
di una acquisita sicurezza, a Recanati
si sviluppò una nota e rinomata fiera,
frequentata per oltre cinque secoli da
tutti gli abitanti delle Marche.
During the Middle Ages, the inhabitants lived
in the shadow of three feudal castles:
Monte Volpino, Monte Morello and Monte
Muzio, which united in the middle of the
12th century, giving rise to the free municipality.
Because of the prestige and security
acquired, Recanati developed a well-known
and renowned trade fair that was attended
by all the inhabitants of the region for over
five centuries.
Nel 1294 la traslazione della Santa Casa
determinò la giurisdizione di Recanati
sul Santuario, ormai frequentata meta
di pellegrinaggi, e sull’abitato di Loreto.
Vissuta per secoli nell’ambito dello Stato
Pontificio, nel 1860 entrò a far parte
del Regno d’Italia. Nel 1798 vi nacque
Giacomo Leopardi (morto a Napoli nel
1837) e nel 1890 Beniamino Gigli (morto
a Roma nel 1957).
In 1294 the movement of the Holy House
made the Sanctuary part of the jurisdiction
of Recanati, which was already popular for
pilgrimages, in addition to the town of Loreto.
For centuries it was considered part
of the Papal States, and in 1860 it became
part of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1798 Giacomo
Leopardi was born here (who died in
Naples in 1837) and in 1890 Beniamino Gigli
was born here (who died in Rome in 1957).

PARK AND NATURE
Curatissimo polmone verde di Recanati,
il Parco di villa Colloredo è molto interessante
dal punto di vista naturalistico
e offre al visitatore una sensazione di
“bosco”. Altro parco d’interesse è quello
dell’Infinito, meta delle passeggiate
del Poeta. Di sera si può ammirare il
chiaro di luna riprodotto in luce, da un
progetto del celebre scenografo premio
Oscar Dante Ferretti.
The well-groomed green lung of Recanati is
Villa Colloredo Park, which is very interesting
RECANATI
from a naturalistic point of view. It offers visitors
an immediate sense of “forest” and
its dense, covering vegetation enables it to
have consolidated and stable fauna. Another
park of interest is that of Infinito, ideal place
for the poet. In the evening is possible to
admire the moonlight reproduced in light,
from a project by the famous Oscar-winning
set designer Dante Ferretti.

A Recanati si può godere di un panorama
a 360° che va dal Monte Conero
fino ai “Monti Azzurri” dei Sibillini con
numerosi scorci da scoprire. A Palazzo
Venieri vi è un vero e proprio balcone
in pieno centro storico e la costa
Adriatica. Si vedono in lontananza i paesi
limitrofi e la Cupola della Basilica
di Loreto. Si può ammirare uno spettacolo
mozzafiato salendo sulla Torre
Civica che scopre tutta la città, o dalla
via adiacente la Cattedrale di San Flaviano
da cui si può ammirare l’amenità
del paesaggio che guarda i Monti e la
campagna. Per godere al meglio i diversi
punti panoramici, vi consigliamo
di passeggiare lungo le mura della città
considerato dai recanatesi un vero e
proprio percorso benessere.
In Recanati you can enjoy a 360° panorama
that goes from Monte Conero to the
”Monti Azzurri”of the Sibillini with numerous
glimpses to dicover. At Palazzo Venieri there
is a balcony in the historical centre and the
Adriatic coast. You can see in the distance
the neighbouring villages and the dome of
the Basilica of Loreto. You can admire a breathtaking
sight by climbing the Torre Civica
that rises above thecity, or from the street
adjacent to the Cathedral of San Flaviano
from which you can admire the amenity of
the landscape overlooking the mountains
and the countryside. We suggest you to
walk along the walls of the city, considered
by the people of Recanati as a real wellness
path, to better enjoy the different panoramic
views.

EVENTS
Tanti sono gli eventi presenti nella Città
della Cultura durante l’anno. Iniziative musicali,
artistiche, feste, mercatini animano
luoghi e vie del centro per gran parte
dell’anno. Si festeggia Giacomo Leopardi
il 21 marzo e il 29 Giugno; si omaggia
Beniamino Gigli con i ridotti d’Opera al
teatro Persiani e d’estate nella splendida
cornice di Palazzo Venieri.
Lunaria è dedicata alla canzone d’autore
con importanti concerti in piazza e l’Art
Festival colora le vie del centro con artisti
di strada provenienti da tutto il mondo.
Non poteva mancare una rassegna concertistica,
itinerante nei luoghi più suggestivi
della città nella versione estiva e
invernale nell’auditorium del Centro mondiale
della Poesia. Mostre ed esposizioni
negli spazi del museo di Villa Colloredo
Mels completano il programma culturale.
There are so many events in the city of Recanati
during the year. Cultural, musical and
artistic initiatives, festivals and historical re-enactments
animate the streets of the historic
centre and offer an opportunity to take a
nice stroll, enjoy a good gelato or an aperitif
in the square. Giacomo Leopardi is celebrated
on 21st March and 29th June; Beniamino
Gigli is honoured with the Opera’s foyer at
the Persiani’s theatre and during the summer
in the beautiful setting of Palazzo Venieri. Lunaria
is dedicated to the song of the author
with important concerts and the Art Festival
colours the streets of the center with street
artists from all over the world. It could not

miss a concert review, itinerant in the most
evocative places of the city in the summer
and winter version in the auditorium of “Centro
Mondiale della Poesia” (world center of
poetry). Show and exhibitions in the spaces
of the museum “Villa Colloredo Mels” complete
the cultural programme.
Tradizioni
TRADITIONS
Piatti tipici recanatesi sono i cosiddetti
“Vincisgrassi” o lasagne (strati di pasta
all’uovo condita con ragù di carne e
cotta al forno). Caratteristici sono poi i
cappelletti in brodo, i salumi di maiale,
le verdure gratinate, il dolce “ciambellone”.
Vi sono, nel territorio recanatese
anche produttori importanti di olio, artigianato
di qualità e imprese creative
di marchi internazionali.
Typical dishes of the town are the so-called
“Vincisgrassi”, or lasagna (layers of egg
pasta with meat sauce baked in the oven).
Its cappelleti in broth (small tortellini), cured
pork, vegetables au gratin, and “ciambellone”,
a cake-like dessert. There are also important
olive oil producers in the Recanati
territory.
