The subsoil of Osimo hides a twin city full
of galleries and passages that have been
dug into the sandstone. A separate world
full of sculpted figures and cryptic symbols
to decipher. There are four underground
routes accessible to the public: the Cantinone
Caves from medieval times and suitable
for every type of visitor, the Dante
Square Caves with enigmatic engravings
connected to initiation rituals, the Riccioni
Caves whose symbolism recalls the
Templar world and the privately owned
Simonetti Caves that can be visited with
a reservation and during special events.

Dell’antica Auximum romana restano
le mura di via Fonte Magna, l’omonima
Fonte, Porta Musone, i reperti del Museo
archeologico e del Lapidarium. Tra
gli ultimi le statue acefale che hanno
valso agli osimani l’appellativo di Senza
Testa. Si dice che le teste mancanti
furono depredate dal condottiero milanese
Giangiacomo Trivulzio nel 1487
in seguito a una battaglia. Altri studiosi
ipotizzano che queste non siano mai
state scolpite oppure che siano cadute
a causa di guerre.
Of the ancient Roman Auximum all that remains
are the walls and fountain of Via Fonte
Magna, Porta Musone, the finds of the
Archaeological Museum and the Lapidarium.
Last but not least, the acephalous statues
remain, which the people of Osimo call the
Headless Statues. It is said that the missing
heads were plundered by the Milanese leader
Giangiacomo Trivulzio following a battle
in 1487. Other scholars have deduced that
the heads were either never sculpted, or
that they fell due to war.

Commende più potenti del Centro Italia:
la chiesetta di San Filippo de’ Plano,
luogo ancora oggi intriso di energie
molto particolari. Documentato dal 1187,
è tuttora considerato il presidio templare
più importante delle Marche.

The fact that Osimo was a major Templar
site is historic and has been documented.
Testimonies of Order members can be traced

of central Italy was in Casenuove di Osimo,
and the small church of San Filippo de’ Plano

Musone, ambiente ideale per chi
vuole immergersi nella natura ricca e
variegata della campagna osimana. Gli
appassionati di mountain bike possono
invece sfidarsi lungo i pendii su cui sorge
la città. Osimo vanta poi una delle
più grandi skateplaza italiane nel centro
sportivo di via Vescovara. A piedi,
in bicicletta, a cavallo o su uno skate,
scegli pure lo sport che preferisci!
Birdwatching and Nordic walking lovers will
adore the Musone River, an ideal environment
for those who want to immerse themselves
in the rich and varied nature of the
countryside. Those who instead love mountain
biking can challenge themselves along
the slopes the city rests on. Osimo also boasts
one of the largest Italian skate plazas, located
in the sports centre in Via Vescovara.
Walking, biking, horseback riding or skateboarding,
you can choose whichever sport
you enjoy most!

SPIRITUALITY
Osimo, città di miracoli e di santi, ha
dato i natali a San Silvestro Gozzolini,
fondatore dell’ordine dei silvestrini e
ha accolto nell’ultima stagione della
sua vita San Giuseppe da Copertino, il
Santo dei Voli, protettore degli studenti.
Anche San Francesco vi passò due
volte lasciando il suo messaggio evangelico
prima di partire in missione verso
l’Oriente. Una lunga e affascinante
storia di fede, che affonda le sue radici
in un territorio che invita alla contemplazione,
perciò… rilassate la mente e
aprite il cuore! Da visitare il Duomo di
San Leopardo, la Basilica di San Giuseppe
e il Santuario di Campocavallo.
Osimo, a city of miracles and saints, is the
birthplace of Saint Silvestro Gozzolini, founder
of the order of the Silvestrini. It was also
home to St. Giuseppe of Copertino, the Saint
of Flights and protector of students, in the
last years of his life. St. Francesco also passed
by here twice, leaving his Gospel message
before embarking on a mission to the
East. A long and fascinating history of faith
with roots in a territory that invites contemplation:

heart! The Cathedral of Saint Leopardo, the
Basilica of St. Giuseppe and the Sanctuary of
Campocavallo should all be visited.

Durante la settimana di Pasqua, ogni
anno, all’imbrunire del Venerdì Santo, si
spengono i lampioni e le insegne dei
negozi, e circa 250 sacconi coperti dai
caratteristici cappucci neri accompagnano
la processione per le vie della
città.
Every year during Easter week, at dusk on
Good Friday the street lights and shop signs
turn off, and about 250 cloaked people wearing
characteristic black hoods accompany
the procession through the streets of the
city.
La Festa del Covo, evento tradizionale
e religioso, si celebra ogni anno la prima
domenica di agosto. Soggetti sacri
realizzati con spighe di grano – i covi -
vengono portati in processione e offerti
in dono alla Madonna. Campocavallo
The Covo Festival, a traditional and religious
event, is celebrated every year on the first
Sunday in August. Sacred subjects made
with wheat ears - the covos - are carried in
the procession and offered as a gift to Our
Lady. Thus Campocavallo becomes a theatre
of musical and gastronomic events..
Il 18 Settembre, per la Festa del patrono
San Giuseppe da Copertino, il centro
storico si addobba a festa e si anima di
eventi e concerti. Imperdibile lo spettacolo
pirotecnico finale! Le grotte sono
da sempre simbolo di un viaggio verso
la riscoperta del sé. La magia di questi
luoghi è ancora presente: basta volerlo
e si può essere ispirati. Così è successo
alla band americana The Orphan Brigade
che ha saputo cogliere l’essenza
di questi ambienti e proprio nei sotterranei
ha dato vita ad un intero album
su Osimo intitolato Heart of the Cave
(settembre 2017).
On 18 September the historic centre becomes
quite festive and is enlivened with
events and concerts for the Festival of the
patron saint, St. Giuseppe of Copertino.
Don’t miss the final fireworks show! Caves
have always been a symbol of a journey
towards self-rediscovery. The magic of these
places is still there: if you seek it, you will
be inspired. This is what happened to the
American band The Orphan Brigade, who
knew how to best capture the essence of
these environments, and created an entire
album in Osimo’s underground called Heart
of the Cave (September 2017).
Shopping
A ridosso di Piazza Boccolino, si trova
il caratteristico Mercato Coperto, conosciuto
come “Piazza dell’Erbe“. Ogni
mattina, gli agricoltori del posto si recano
in questo storico mercato per vendere
i loro prodotti a km 0. È possibile
inoltre acquistare carni e pesce locali. Il
giovedì mattina, inoltre, in pieno centro
storico, non perdetevi il mercato settimanale,
luogo di incontro dei cittadini
osimani.
The characteristic covered market, known as
“Piazza dell’Erbe” is near Boccolino Square.
Every morning, local farmers go to this historic
market to sell their products at km 0.
You can also buy local meat and fish here.
There is also a weekly market on Thursday
morning in the heart of the historic centre,
which is an occasion for the town’s citizens
to meet up and chat.
