Salone
degli Stemmi
COAT OF ARMS HALL
All’ultimo piano del Palazzo
Comunale (foto 1) sono riuniti
gli stemmi comunali dei centri
che contribuirono all’erezione
del monumento commemorativo
della battaglia di
Castelfidardo, completato nel
1912. Al suo interno è conservato
un quadro del pittore
Giovanni Gallucci (artista anconetano
figlio di Giuseppe,
segretario del capoluogo) nel
quale è riprodotta fedelmente
l’ultima fase della Battaglia
(foto 3). Un tempo questo
salone era anche adibito a
teatro per pubbliche rappresentazioni.
Oggi è sede del
Consiglio Comunale.
Located on the last floor of the
Town Hall (photo 1), it preserves
all the coats of arms of the centres
that contributed to building
the monument of the Battle of
Castelfidardo that was completed
in 1912. Inside there is a
painting from Giovanni Gallucci
of Ancona (the son of the capital’s
secretary, Giuseppe) that
faithfully reproduces the last part
of the Battle (photo 3). This hall
was once used as a theatre for
public performances. Today it is
home to the City Council.
Collegiata
di Santo Stefano
COLLEGIATE
OF ST. STEFANO
Ubicata nella centralissima
piazza della Repubblica, la
collegiata è sorta intorno
all’anno Mille. L’attuale struttura
a croce latina è stata
eseguita negli anni che vanno
dal 1743 al 1770 con le
forme derivate dall’architettura
del Vanvitelli. Pregevoli
le opere conservate all’interno:
un’”Ultima cena” di Felice
Pellegrini (1594), una statua
di San Tommaso di arte toscana
del XVI secolo, i Santi
Stefano e Vittore con la Madonna
dell’olandese Ernst de
Schaych (1567-1631) che per
oltre un decennio visse a
Castelfidardo e nei dintorni,
contribuendo a diffondere
nella cultura figurativa marchigiana
elementi della pittura
nordica.
Collegiate of St. Stefano
Located in the central Repubblica
Square, the collegiate church
was founded around the year
1000. Its current Latin-cross
layout was implemented in the
years from 1743 to 1770 with
shapes derived from Vanvitelli’s
architecture. There are many
praiseworthy works inside: a
“Last Supper” by Felice Pellegrini
(1594), a 16th century Tuscan
art statue of Saint Thomas, Saints
Stephen and Victor with the Madonna
by the Dutchman Ernst de
Schaych (1567- 1631) who lived in
Castelfidardo and the surrounding
area for more than a decade,
contributing to the spread of
Nordic painting elements in the
figurative Marche culture.
Chiesa
San Francesco
ST. FRANCESCO CHURCH
La prima chiesa e il primo
convento che i frati costruirono
all’interno del paese
(1292), nel periodo in cui San
Francesco d’Assisi passò nella
Marca per annunciare la
pace e la fede. All’interno
le quattro statue in gesso
del tardo barocco, poste tra
i sei altari laterali, opera dei
milanesi Stefano Interlenghi
e Lorenzo Bernasconi (1776),
rappresentano i dottori della
chiesa: S. Ambrogio, S. Girolamo,
S. Agostino e S. Gregorio
Magno. Inoltre, conserva un
San Carlo Borromeo attribuito,
come altri dipinti, a G. Cades.
Oggi la chiesa è adibita
ad auditorium pubblico e vi
si tengono conferenze e mostre
d’arte. L’antico convento
annesso, anch’esso ristrutturato,
è occupato da uffici comunali
e sale da esposizione.
The first church and the first
convent built by the friars in the
town (1292), in the period when
St. Francesco of Assisi passed
through the area bringing peace
and faith. Inside there are
four late-Baroque statues placed
among the six side altars which
are all by the Milanese sculptors
Stefano Interlenghi and Lorenzo
Bernasconi (1776): they represent
the doctors of the church:
St. Ambrogio, St. Girolamo,
St. Agostino and St. Gregorio the
Great. It also has a painting of
San Carlo Borromeo that is attributed,
like other paintings, to G.
Cades. Today the church is used
as a public auditorium and conferences
and art exhibitions are
held there. The former convent,
which has also been renovated,
is occupied by municipal offices
and exhibition halls.

Monumento
nazionale
delle Marche
NATIONAL MONUMENT
OF THE MARCHE REGION
Il maestoso Monumento
commemorativo è collocato
all’interno del Parco delle Rimenbranze.
Fu eretto in occasione
del cinquantenario
della battaglia di Castelfidardo
(18 settembre 1860) per
ricordare ai posteri lo storico
evento. La scultura (foto
4) commemorativa poggia
ed esce da una montagna di
160 mq in massi di travertino
bianco di Ascoli. Le figure
dei soldati passano da massa
informe appena abbozzata
nel marmo, fino a silhouette
di uomini che si plasmano
dalla roccia per diventare nel
nobile bronzo, soldato dopo
soldato, sempre più reali e
più grandi fino ad arrivare
all’espressione più alta e
definita nel generale Enrico
Cialdini, che, a cavallo del
suo destriero, indica il luogo
dov’è il nemico ed incita i
suoi alla carica. I soldati, tutti
diversi, sono rappresentati
nella posizione di corsa, con
tutte le espressioni di dolore,
foga e disperazione degli
uomini in guerra. Con questa
opera l’autore intendeva rappresentare
il percorso sofferto
dell’Unità d’Italia e del
suo popolo che da massa
informe e divisa, diventava,
attraverso la sofferenza della
guerra, una sola nazione ed
un solo popolo.
The majestic memorial Monument
is located inside the Park
of Remembrance. It was built on
the fiftieth anniversary of the
battle of Castelfidardo (18 september
1860), to remind those in
the present of the historic event.
The commemorative sculpture
(photo 4) rests on and comes
out of a 160 square metre mass
in white travertine from Ascoli.
The soldiers’ figures start out as
unshaped masses barely sculpted
into the marble, then pass
on to become silhouettes of men
who from rock begin to be shaped
in noble bronze, then soldier
after soldier, ever more real
and larger until they reach their
best expression, clearly defined
in the sculpture of General Enrico
Cialdini, who atop his horse
indicates the place where the
enemy stands and urges his men
forward. The soldiers are all different,
but are in running stances
and have the expressions of
pain, sorrow and despair of men
in war. With this work, the author
intended to represent the suffering
road towards the unification
of Italy and its people who, from
an indefinite and divided mass,
became one people and one nation
through the suffering of war.
Il Sacrario-ossario
THE MEMORIAL OSSUARY
Progettato dall’ingegnere
Antonio Bianchi ed eretto
negli anni 1861-1870 sul colle
di Mirano, ai margini meridionali
della selva di Castelfidardo,
proprio dove si svolse la
battaglia. La forma quadrata
rappresenta il paradiso, dove
entrano dai due ingressi i caduti
dei due opposti eserciti,
le piramidi tronche sono le
vite spezzate dalla battaglia,
mentre la colonna centrale è
il segno della pietà divina sopra
le parti contendenti.
Designed by engineer Antonio
Bianchi and built in the years
1861-1870 on the hill of Mirano
on the southern edge of the Castelfidardo
forest, the site where
the battle took place. Its square
form represents paradise, where
the fallen of the two opposing
armies enter from the two entrances,
the truncated pyramids
are the lives ended by the battle,
while the central column is
the sign of divine piety over the
contending sides.
