A pochi passi dal centro troviamo una
delle spiagge più suggestive d’Italia,
la spiaggia del Passetto, costellata da
colorati grottini scavati nella roccia, un
tempo utilizzati dai pescatori come rifugio
per le imbarcazioni, oggi animate in
estate dai “grottaroli“, amanti del mare,
della pesca e della tranquillità.

has numerous works by the famous painter
Anastasia Podesti and many other famous

Il colle dove ora sorge il Duomo di San
Ciriaco, nell’antichità veniva chiamato
promontorio Cumero, nome composto
dalle parole greche Kuma e Oro, che
significano “monte opposto al mare”. Il
Duomo fu edificato sui resti di un tempio
ellenistico dedicato alla Venere Euplea
distrutto nel 558 da un terremoto.
Nel VI secolo fu edificata una basilica
dedicata a S. Lorenzo, ricostruita nel
sec. IX in seguito alle distruzioni saracene.
Malgrado i danni dovuti alle due
guerre mondiali e al terremoto, la cattedrale
è stata riportata alla sua austera
eleganza. La sagoma dell’edificio, a
pianta centrale a croce greca, è sovrastata
dalla cupola a dodici facce, slanciata
e voltata alla gotica, considerata
dagli esperti una tra le più antiche e
perfette cupole in Italia.
The hill where the Cathedral of San Ciriaco
now stands was called Cumero promontory
in ancient times, which is composed of
the Greek words Kuma and Oro, meaning
“mountain opposite the sea”. The Cathedral
was built on the remains of a Hellenistic temple
dedicated to Venus Euplea that was destroyed
by an earthquake in 558. In the 6th
century a basilica dedicated to St. Lawrence
was built, and then rebuilt in the 9th century
following the Saracen destruction. Despite
the damage caused by two world wars and
an earthquake, the cathedral has returned
to emanating its austere elegance. The building
has the shape of a central Greek cross,
