Natural polledness
In general every farmer decides himself, whether he
wants his cattle with or without horns. Since a raising
number of farmers is interested in keeping cattle without
horns, but does not like the process of dehorning the
animals, we have to breed polled cattle in the future.
The term “natural polledness” was created by Dutch
Simmentaler breeders. We gladly take over the term,
because it expresses exactly the fact that there exist two
allels of the polled gene and that the allel for polledness
is dominant over the allel for horned animals.
Unfortunately during the last decades the natural polled
animals were culled at an early stage, because people
thought that these animals had a weaker constitution.
In the future Bavarian- Genetics hopes to offer a wider
range of polled bulls.
Product quality
Unfortunately our knowledge about quality characteristics
of Simmentaler beef and milk (higher CLA content
etc.) is still very limited. However, some attempts were
made in the past to find out about such traits. For
example, milk was tested for its Kappa-Casein type
and beef was tested for marbling and tenderness. This
product differentiation does not find much favour from
the big supermarket chains – for them beef is beef and
milk is milk, so they don’t have to pay a higher price
for high quality products. Test done in Germany show
that products from Simmentaler cattle have superior
quality. Consequently, it should be possible to realize
a better price for these products.
Genomical selection is a big challenge for all people
responsible for breeding and artificial insemination. As
we see a bright future for Simmentaler if we don’t make
any mistakes, Bavarian-Genetics will not change its
focus on dual purpose in the long term. Dual purpose
is no lip service for us, but the base of our thinking, our
actions and our success.
