The Red Meat Producers’
Organization (RPO)
The Red Meat Producers’ Organization (RPO) is an independent producers’
organization that strives towards sustainable and profitable red meat production
in South Africa.
The RPO protects the interests of the red meat producers
within the value chain of the red meat industry. In this
capacity, it acts as mouthpiece for the total red meat
industry. As collective negotiator organization, it is the
task of the RPO to promote the economic well-being of
its members.
One of the most important functions of the RPO is
to protect the 40% ad valorem-tariff and to monitor
irregularities in terms of imports. The RPO also monitors
all legislation which could have a negative impact on
the red meat producers and comment on behalf of the
producers through the relevant channels.
The RPO also focuses on international agreements,
extension services, animal health as well as export
promotion.
It is the RPO’s function to present the producer’s interest
at all institutions, including the authorities. The RPO also
creates and maintains a positive image of the product
and the industry.
Furthermore, the RPO is intensively involved with predation
management, the combatting of stock theft, negotiations
for the lowering of input- and marketing costs, information
on production systems and market information.
The RPO represents the interests of the red meat
producer in the Red Meat Industry Forum, where all
institutions involved in the value chain of the red meat
industry are represented.
The RPO, together with the National Emerging Red Meat
Producers’ Organization (NERPO), forms the Federation
of Red Meat Producers of South Africa. The Federation
handles the collective interests of primary commercial
and emerging red meat producers.
These important functions for the survival and wellbeing
of primary red meat producers as well as the
total red meat industry, is funded from two separate
sources of financing, the statutory levy and a voluntary
producers’ contribution.
As far as the statutory levy is concerned, the RPO is,
with other role players, responsible for the functions
of consumer education, production development and
industry liaison.
The RPO is dependant on the voluntary producer’s
contribution for its administrative capacity as this can’t be
funded from the statutory levy.
