Benares, IX, 187 S} No caso do nosso sacrifício animal há duas vedi: uma que e mais ou menos a ordinária que descrevemos no texto e outra <strong>sobre</strong>levada (Schwab 1896: 14, 2I) e <strong>sobre</strong> a qual está um fogo, que e um dos fo gos do sacrifício (Ap.çr.sú. Os mantras exprimem que as más sortes são afastadas e que os deuses protegem a vedi de todos os lados. Os mantras têm a seguinte ordem: I, 36, '3, 14, II1, 8, '3,2,5,4 (hino âpri); quando há vários animais sacrificados e vários postes, II1, 8, 6, II. O mesmo ritual e prescrito em Ait.Br. 6, 2, 17, 23, que comenta os versos do Rig Veda. Esse hino exprime já as diversas funções do yúpa, que mata os demônios, protege os homens, simboliza a vida, leva as oferendas aos deuses e sustenta o ceu e a terra (Taitt.S. 6, 3,4, I, 3). 145 O sacrificante tambem fica segurando o yupa por um certo tempo (Ap. çr.su. 7, I I, 5). Segundo alguns sutras, a mulher e o oficiante fazem o mesmo (a tradição dos Apastambins parece ser a melhor). Em todos esses casos, e o sacrificante que faz uma parte das unções e passa a mão ao longo de todo o poste.
