Vários desses móveis mobíliam hoje as salas do Instituto. So much so, that early last century, Edmundo Navarro de Andrade furnished his house at the Rio Claro with furniture made out of eucalypt. And Navarro himself sent eucalypt lumber to analysis at the IPT. “While native wood was abundant in Brazil, few people were interested in using eucalypt wood,” he said, as the country had the best wood in the world in abundance: pinheirodo-paraná, peroba-rosa, imbuia, jacaranda, and, above all, mahogany, the dimensional stability champion. In other words, these woods don’t warp or contract in the presence of moisture, unlike the woods that are harder to work with, tending to balance out with the moisture present in the environment, contracting and changing shape. It is the lack of dimensional stability that makes a window stick or a door warp, for example. When the nobler wood that was more resistant to decay started becoming scarce, the IPT kicked its research on wood preservation off together with the Associação Brasileira dos Preservadores de Madeira. The outcome of this joint effort was the development of an autoclave system in which eucalypt is soaked in products that preserve it, under strong pressure and high temperatures and, as a result, eucalypt fenceposts, stages and sleepers started replacing native wood with a great price advantage. Parallelly, the physics and mechanics of the eucalypt trunk started being studied for board production, something that represents a problem due to the high growth tensions that cause the wood to crack when spread out. The solution was using quadruple saws. With regards to trunks that were smaller in diameter, the solution was to use panels with 5-cm slats, assembled on opposite directions to compensate for growth ring pressure, glued and pressed, resulting in panels used to make modulated furniture. Several of these pieces of furniture currently furnish the Institute’s rooms. Another research project indicated that lighter eucalypt, such as ‘E. grandis’, were better to make slat panels after air-dried and after dried in heaters equipped with demoisturizer controls. Faithful to its mission of creating technologies, the IPT carried studies out for Aracruz and Duratex, among other companies, to evaluate the possibilities of using sawed eucalypt wood, currently exported by Aracruz, for reconstituted panels, nowadays a product that is very well accepted by the international market. So far as furniture is concerned, it attracted famous designers such as Frenchman Michel Arnoud to make eucalypt furniture and, in 1997, signed an agreement with the Facudade de Belas Artes for it to design eucalypt furniture. One of these pieces, a bed, was awarded by the Museu da Casa Brasileira.
