A later bird count performed at the eucalypt plantation allowed an even larger amount of birds to be identified than in the capturing procedure itself, i.e. 48 species. A study carried out by one of the world’s most respected ecologists, Frenchman Jacques Vielliard, in Duratex eucalypt plantations, in the State of São Paulo, shows that in the plantation and in its surrounding area, i.e., in the preserved woods next to the eucalypt plantations, so many species of birds were found that it is not viable to list them all: laughing falcon, squirrel cuckoo, blue and white swallow, guira cuckoo, Hoffmann’s woodcreeper, black-crowded Tityra, red-shouldered Macaw, violet capped woodnymph, olive-spotted hummingbird, streaked flycatcher, black-throated Grosbeak, trufted anthsrike, ferruginous pygmy-owl, saffron finch, rufous-capped Antshrike, unicolored Antwren, spotted nothura, spectacled owl, sickle-winged nightjar, chestnut-bellied seed-finch, unicolored blackbird, roadside hawk, rufousee-browed Peppershrike, white-faced whistling-duck, trumpeter, rufous hornero, tropical parula, fulvous whistling-duck, South American snipe, mousecolored Tyrannulet, red-ruffed fruitcrow, masked Yellowthroat, blond-credted Woodpecker, hooded siskin, rufous Casiornis, striped Cuckoo, orange-headed Tanager, bay-ringed Tyrannulet, red-legged seriema, ruby-crowded tanager, grassland Sparrow, highland Elaenia, king vulture, vermilion flycatcher, purple-throated Euphonia, long-tailed tyrant. The abundance of mammals in the eucalypt plantation was also scientifically registered by forest engineers Manoel Francisco Moreira and Rolf Andréas Berdt, who in the August 2005 issue of the CREA-RS magazine identified skunks, tamanduá-mirim , and a variety of wild rodents. Viçosa researchers, meanwhile, also registered the tamanduá-bandeira, lobo-guará, suçuarana, cateto and a species of deer in the plantations, a list to which professor Vielliard allows the boipeva, anaconda , teiú lizard, and the false coral snake, the cuíca, cotia, ferret, irara, rabbits, macaco-prego, ouriço-cacheiro, quati and the hairy armadillo to be added, to the 36 already identified species, a list that must include 19 amphibians, frogs, toads, and the sapo-oval, as well. An important matter, however, is that the eucalypt fruit is food for tuins and parrot, which eat it while it is still green, and possibly for other fruit-eating birds that have been seen in the eucalypt plantations, among which the tucano-de-bico-verde and pavó, while the saíra-de-papo-preto, the choquinha-lisa, and the pitiguari feed off of insects that seek eucalypts flowers. While describing the pitiguari, the highlight is the fact that researcher Tomas Sigrist includes, in “Aves do Brasil – Uma visão artística” indicates the eucalypts plantations as an actual habitat of this species.
