O E U C A L I P T O - U M S É C U L O N O B R A S I L 42 O primata quase extinto The nearly extinct primate In the native forest Duratex has preserved next to its eucalypt plantations in Lençóis Paulista, there are 72 black-lion-tamarin ‘Leontopithecus chrysopygus’, members of one of the most threatened species in the world. There are so few of these naturally rare little monkeys left, as its habitat is limited to certain areas in the State of São Paulo that, through 1971, the species had been considered extinct by global specialists. The species was rediscovered by Unicamp professor Jacques Vielliard, in the above-mentioned forest while he was surveying the birds that lived around the eucalypt plantation. When rediscovered, the black-lion-tamarin became the subject of care of dozens of scientists. Although for the public at large the most famous of the lion-tamarin is the golden variety ‘Leontopithecus rosalia’, the black-lion-tamarin is ranked in worse conditions in the Read List of Threatened Animals, the global list of endangered species. Biologists such as Cláudio Pádua have researched the species since the early 1980’s at the Morro do Diabo, at the Pontal do Paranapanema and in Duratex’s reserves. To the scientist, “the species” preservation cannot be entirely under government control; private properties must be involved. At the farm where I am working, there is a preserved patch of forest near the eucalypt”, where the lion-tamarins live, he wrote. São Paulo’s Fundação Parque Zoológico and the Rio de Janeiro’s Centro de Primatologia also have a few monkeys of this species, which they try to breed in captivity aiming at someday repopulating the areas from where the species disappeared and to add new genetic assets to the isolated populations, the consanguinity of which is increasing at a dangerous rate. The black-lion-tamarin’s scientific name is ‘Leontopithecus chrysopygus’, derived from its abundant, shining mane seen around its head and because of its very dark color. The primate lives in family groups formed by two to seven monkeys, it feeds off of fruit, seeds, flowers, frogs, lizards, and tree resin, the bark of which they puncture with teeth that are specialized for this purpose. One to three offspring are born from the female’s gestation, which lasts about 130 days, and the entire family cares for the newcomers. Among the lion tamarins the behavior of the father and of the older pups, carrying the youngsters on their backs, is characteristic, and they only deliver them to their biological mothers when it comes time to feed. This behavior is important to develop the maternal instinct of future mothers, as in this genus maternal procedures are not instinctive.
