O E U C A L I P T O - U M S É C U L O N O B R A S I L 94 Of the 15 cubic meters of wood per hectare per year it harvested from its eucalypt plantations in 1970, Brazil reached an average productivity of 45.5 cubic meters per hectare/year and a maximum of 60 cubic meters. Nobody dares speculate about future productivity, just like 20 years ago nobody could imagine that Brazil, which imported 90% of the short fiber pulp it needed, would become the product’s biggest exporter. This is the outcome of the constant technological innovation involving eucalypt, both in the forest and in the industrial areas. The author of these number- and fact-based claims was forest engineer Antônio Joaquim de Oliveira, former president of the Instituto de Pesquisas e Estudos Florestais, IPEF and forest director for Duratex. He said that in order to render the plantation so productive, researchers from all over Brazil first invested in species selection, later in trees with the most desired characteristics, and then in cloning, currently the base of the eucalypt plantation. Chancre and other diseases, which represented a risk to eucalypt plantations, were controlled via genetic selection and clone planting, allowing resistant trees to be produced and healthy forests to be formed. Other research made selecting trees capable of making better use of soil resources viable, in such a manner as for today’s eucalypt culture to have little to do with the one of the past, i.e., it is highly technological. It was the Brazilian technology that innovated the world, as it was here that the eucalypt forests were fertilized for the first time, something that is so important these days that 50% of the deployment cost comes from fertilization. The technology led to the minimum cultivation process and yet today major producers of the likes of Duratex, Votorantim, Suzano and Ripasa have partnerships with universities that get resources from FAPESP in order for scientists from the main São Paulo institutions to sequence the genes that interest the most to the producers. “Some 33,000 genes of the eucalypt trees have been sequenced, among them those that command growth speed and the resistance to pests, diseases and other stress factors, among other things,” said Antônio Joaquim de Oliveira. This database was opened to the scientific community, which is already identifying new potential, not only in the forest, pulp, and wood areas, but also in the drug area.
