O mel de eucalipto
A Confederação Brasileira de Apicultura informa que das 24 mil toneladas de mel produzidas
pelo País em 2003, 80%, isto é, 19 mil toneladas, foram exportadas. No ano seguinte,
os 4 milhões de colméias espalhadas por eucaliptais e pomares levaram à produção de 33
mil toneladas de mel.
Não por acaso, constata o Sebrae, os maiores produtores de mel do Brasil são os Estados
de São Paulo e Rio Grande do Sul, pioneiros no reflorestamento com eucalipto, ao lado do
Estado de Minas Gerais. E não só graças ao eucalipto mas também à abelha africanizada,
que produz muito mais mel a partir das floradas do eucalipto, em 50 anos o Brasil passou
do 27º para o 5º lugar mundial na produção de mel.

Eucalypts honey
According to the Brazilian Apiculture Confederation, of the 24,000 tons of honey
produced in Brazil in 2003, 80%, i.e., 19,000 tons were exported. In the following year,
the 4 million beehives spread throughout eucalypt plantations and orchards led to the
production of 33,000 tons of honey.
To Sebrae, it is by no chance Brazil’s main honey producers are in the States of São
Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul, which pioneered reforestation with eucalypt, alongside
the State of Minas Gerais. And not only thanks to eucalypt, rather, also, to the africanized
bee, which produces a lot more honey from eucalypt blossoming, in 50 years Brazil
surged to the 5 th place in the global honey production ranking, up from the 27 th place.
