While it is not the myth’s major guzzler, eucalypt is, in fact, a major absorber of carbon dioxide, the gas the planet must “sequester,” the term used by the Kyoto Protocol, to prevent global heating. For millions of years, ocean micro-fauna captured carbon which was then turned into oil, stored in the depths of the Earth. Without this carbon, the world became inhabitable. In the past century, however, mankind started lifting this oil to the surface. Each time an engine is switched on, it returns carbon to the atmosphere and contributes to global warming. To minimize this nefarious effect fossil fuel has, the option is to plant forests, particularly eucalypt ones. Eucalypt is so important as a carbon sequester that companies of the likes of Aracruz and Klabin, major eucalypt planters, are already marketing carbon sequestration credits at the Chicago Climate Exchange and at the European Climate Exchange, sold to companies that joined the voluntary registration, reduction, and emissions marketing system for six greenhouse effect gases. These companies purchase the so-called “greenhouse effect gas emission reduction units,” a new source of foreign exchange for Brazil.
