In the Southern states, the systematic destruction of the pine trees won the collaboration of German and Polish immigrants, according to the traditions of their homelands, build wooden houses to take advantage of the thermal comfort offered by the insulating material. And they also started to manufacture boards, and created a booming trade of wood that supplied the construction industry of the Brazilian Southwest, and exporting large quantities to Europe and even to Argentina. Ironically, the wood of the devastated pine tree forests in the South was distributed to many Brazilian states via railroad, whose locomotives demanded more and more wood to produce steam and, at the beginning of iron and steel production, trains were carrying another sub-product of wood, charcoal, also produced at the expense of native forests, when pine trees, already very rare, were replaced by ipês ‘Tapebuia alba’ and jatobás ‘Hymenaea courbaril’, later by jacarandá ‘Jacaranda cuspidifolia’, mogno ‘Swietenia macrophylla’, and maçaranduba ‘Pouteria ramiflora’, transformed in planks also taken to the consumer market by railroad and, more recently, in trucks. When finally the people on the side on the roads had cut the native forests to sell them as locomotive fuel, the riparian forests and even the cambará, ‘Gochnotia polyphoma’ of Brazilian savannas, the cerrados, the increasing distance of the forests to be harvested made it clear that it would be necessary to plant forests to produce wood quickly, or progress itself would be compromised.
